Business NeedBanco Matone has experienced rapid growth over the past two years, necessitating the expansion and upgrade of its entire server and storage infrastructure. Besides the need for greater processing and storage capacity, the business needed to address issues of reliability and availability.

SolutionBanco Matone worked with Dell consultants to upgrade its IT infrastructure. The solution included Dell™ PowerEdge™ servers running VMware virtualization software, a Dell/EMC SAN equipped with Enterprise Flash Drives (EFDs), a Dell PowerVault™ tape library and Symantec™ Backup Exec™ software for backup and restore.

  Benefits

•  160% increase in processing capacity

•  200% improvement in backup performance

•  48% savings in power

•  280% increase in storage capacity

Founded in 1967, Banco Matone (Matone) has 800 employees, and headquarters in Porto Alegre, the capital of Rio Grande do Sul, São Paulo and Rio de Janeiro. The first company in Brazil to offer personal loans over the phone, Matone has been a pioneer in offering innovative products and services since its inception.

Due to its rapid expansion over the past two years, the company had to expand and update its servers and storage infrastructure. Besides the need for greater processing and storage capacity, the business needed to address issues of reliability and availability.

Upgrading infrastructure to support rapid growth

With guidance from Dell Consulting Services, Matone assessed the environment and defined the upgrade requirements and performance standards needed for the server and storage platform. The company also determined how to reuse existing resources in a new architecture designed for higher availability and increased reliability. Banco Matone had already been virtualizing servers, so it had a VMware platform in place

with servers, backup systems and storage that it could use in conjunction with the new equipment to enhance its virtualization initiative.

Credit is the key to sustained growth in the expanding Brazilian consumer economy. Institutions such as Banco Matone, which focuses on providing consigned credit—or payroll loans—through its 85 stores and business branches, are playing a significant role in keeping consumers buying.

“ We increased processing capacity by 160 percent, increased storage capacity by 280 percent and improved backup performance by 200 percent by acquiring the new Dell infrastructure.” Guilherme Lessa, IT Director, Banco Matone

Working with Dell consultants, Matone quickly identified how to increase processing and storage capacity, and enhance system reliability and availability. In addition to existing Dell servers and storage, Banco Matone acquired Dell PowerEdge R710 and R610 servers with Intel Xeon processors, a Dell/EMC CX4-240 SAN equipped with the highest performance Enterprise Flash Drives (EFDs), a Dell PowerVault ML6020 tape library, and Symantec Backup Exec software for backup and restore. Matone sourced its VMware, Microsoft and Symantec products from Dell, which it considers a partner in single-vendor solutions.

Matone chose Dell for its infrastructure upgrade because of the bank’s excellent existing relationship with Dell and Dell’s outstanding customer service record, as well as the quality of the solution, the low rate of failures with Dell hardware and the interoperability of the new equipment with the existing solution. “Our partnership with Dell brings us many advantages,” says Guilherme Lessa, Banco Matone’s IT director. “Dell knows our business needs, and they have been able to provide a solution customized for our specific requirements.”

Avoiding business downtime

The Dell consultants worked along with the bank’s technical team to install the entire infrastructure and bring it online efficiently and on time. The final installation and activation of the new solutions had no impact on Banco Matone’s operations, which was critical because any interruption would have been very costly in terms of lost business.

The infrastructure upgrade gave Matone the ability to maintain its growth and scale to meet future demands. “We eliminated reporting bottlenecks and are prepared to support the rapid growth of our business, thanks to Dell,” says Lessa. “We increased processing speed by 160 percent, increased storage capacity by 280 percent and improved backup performance by 200 percent by acquiring the new Dell infrastructure.”

One of the major factors in Matone’s decision to undertake this initiative was the potential energy savings consistent with the company’s sustainability policies. With the new Dell infrastructure, Matone is qualified to meet its Green IT goals and the growth in the demands of its business

by economizing power and conserving natural resources. “We are calculating savings of at least 48 percent in power due to the installation of new, more economical Dell servers with better performance,” says Lessa.

Improving productivity

With its higher performance solution, Matone has realized growth in its core business. “The more loans our staff can process, the more revenue we generate,” says Lessa. “The response time for the analysis and approval of credit has decreased.”

In addition, Matone can provide shorter response times to its 1,000 bank correspondents throughout Brazil, even in locations that are hard to reach, using its correspondent portal on the Internet, which is now far more robust.

To support the infrastructure, Matone contracts with Dell Support Services with Mission Critical, 24x7 response. “We cannot tolerate outages,” says Lessa. “Dell Support gives us confidence. With our previous Dell solution we never required any interventions, but Dell Support Services gives us an extra layer of protection.”
