Fall Semester, 2014
WHAT IS AUGMENTED REALITY?The term "'Augmented Reality'" was coined by Tom Caudell andDavid Mizzel in 1990.Originally developed for military applications, then the technology has been transferred to civilian domains such as the medical field, the automobile or leisure industries and many more.
Augmented reality (AR) is the integration of digital information with live video and the user's environment in real time. Devices used for Augmented Reality are computer, camera, processor and screen.
WHAT IS AUGMENTED REALITY?
A set of tracking devices is connected to a computer that analyzes and treats the environmental data, while in turn providing an adequate response to the user interface, which then displays (or emits) enhanced information.
HOW DOES AUGMENTED REALITY?
HISTORY
OFAUGMENTED REALITY
The idea behind augmented reality is nothing new and early prototypes date back to the late 60s (Sutherland, 1968). Although initially clumsy and inefficient, the military quickly saw the potential behind this technology and introduced heavy funding for AR related research.Early achievements include heads up displays (HUDs) in jet fighters and helicopters that could, among others, help with targeting and provide night vision.Such advancements were then passed onto civil aviation and later cars.
AUGMENTED REALITY IN
GAME WORLD
Augmented Reality games consist of a
portable device, augmented reality card,
software, compass and GPRS. The
device is pointed at the card which then
triggers the appearance of a series
of images or game.
The other option is wearable computing and worn head-mounted devices. Steve Mann has been described as the founder of the field of wearable computing and also as "the father of AR".
AUGMENTED REALITY&
SCENT TECHNOLOGYThere are many augmented reality applications about food. You hold your camera to product or restaurants so you can see information about that product or place.
