As a branch of the San Francisco Public

Library that stores and provides books and

maps, the primary focus of the project deals

with two critical issues: circulation and section.

Beginning with a study of human movement

and the circulation of humans themselves the

project evolved in order to resolve interior

space, movement and program on a narrow

site as they relate to an architectural idea of

circulation of both person and object.

The program for this project was a 500

square-foot sleeping quarters for eleven hikers

located on the site of a California Dam. The

rigor of this project was in favoring the system

over the form while paying particular attention

to materiality and construction. The materiality,

directionality, axis and unit were all chosen in

respect to the existing dam and surrounding

environment.

Stemming from the delicate yet

defining membrane that separates

air and water within a single bubble,

this project is centered upon

boundaries. Limitations of space can

create specific and magnificent

experiences. Limits of site conditions

and program requirements cause

reactions that similarly manipulate

and define the form of the architecture.
