Definition of energyEnergy can b define in different manners some
of them are as followsEnergy cannot be created nor
destroyed .Energy is the ability to do work. The capacity for vigorous activity .An adequate or abundant amount of suc
h power .
Sources of energysources of energy are divided in two parts.Non renewable sources Renewable sources A non-renewable resource is a
natural resource which cannot be produced, grown, generated, or used on a scale which can sustain its consumption rate, once depleted there is no more available for future needs. Also considered non-renewable are resources that are consumed much faster than nature can create them.
Examples• Fossil fuels (such as coal, petroleum,
and natural gas)• nuclear power (uranium) • aquifers are examples. In contrast,
resources such as timber (when harvested sustainably) or metals (which can be recycled) .
Renewable source - Renewable source is natural source which does not have a limited supply. Renewable energy can be used again and again, and will never run out.
Examples Biomass Hydro Geothermal Solar Tidal Wave Wind
Why use of fossil fuel?
Very high calorific value Easy to locate with advance technology.Coal is a fossil fuel that is found in abundance.Transportation of fossil fuels are easy.Construction of power plants that work on fossil
fuels is also easy.Petroleum is the most used form of fossil fuels for
all types of vehicles.Extraction is easy with cheap cost
Why is there a need for alternative sources of energy?90 per cent of the worlds energy supply’s come
from fossil fuels.Stopping of fossil fuels becoming rare.Burning fossil fuels has increased atmospheric
pollution.Vehicle exhausts contribute to acid rain more so
than power stations burning coal. The carbon stored in fossil fuels is released as
carbon dioxide when they are burnt – this leads to the green house effect and global warming
Don’t get this confused with the hole in the ozone layer – this was caused by CFC’s
Alternative source of energyDefinition
• An energy source that can be used instead of fossil fuels .
It is usually a renewable source of energy
that could be used when fossil fuels run out.
Renewable sources of energy Some of renewable(alternate) sources of
energy are:SunlightWindRain TidesGeothermal heatHydroBiomass
Biomass Biomass, as a renewable energy source,
is biological material from living, or recently living organisms. As an energy source, biomass can either be used directly, or converted into other energy products such as biofuel.
Biomass gasification.Biomass heating system.Biomass fuel.
HydropowerHydropower, or water power is power that
is derived from the force or energy of falling water, which may be harnessed for useful purposes.
Generation of electricity.Generation on large scale. Cost of generation will b low.
Geothermal heat & powerGeothermal energy originates from the
heat retained within the Earth since the original formation of the planet, from radioactive decay of minerals, and from solar energy absorbed at the surface.
Geothermal heat is used for heating application.
Geothermal power is used to generate electricity.
Sunlight , Wind , Rain , TidesThese are the major alternate sources of
energy. With the help of al these we can generate
electricity by using solar system , generators, and by dams.
We can also generate heat by sunlight by using heating system and can also generate any type of mechanical energy with these sources.
Advantages of using natural sources of energyThey are inexhaustible – they will always be
available – they are renewableThey are clean and will not damage the EarthThere are several types – so one or more of
them is present in each countryMost natural sources can be used on a small
scale and serve local needs therefore cutting costs of transmitting the energy
It just require a one time big investment.
