AOM is an innovative approach to operations management, focusing front-line managers and their staff on the achievement of quality and service levels at the optimum cost. AOM transforms the typical top-down, data-driven, command-and-control management style into a collaborative, method-driven, bottom-up culture, where good decisions are made daily at the heart of the operation.

Primarily, AOM drives fundamental and lasting change in management behaviours. It achieves this by concentrating on three aspects: Method, Skills and Tools. These are introduced to your organisation through a structured 12–16 week implementation programme.

AOM?What isAt Active Operations Management International we believe that the most significant cause of low performance in a processing environment is individuals not having the right amount of work to do in the time available. The use of Active Operations Management (AOM™) ensures that the people available at any given time are matched to the work to be completed, balancing the requirements for quality, service levels and cost. Organisations that implement AOM achieve significant performance improvements in their operations.

The AOM Method plays a pivotal role in the success of AOM, defining the essential daily, weekly and monthly planning and control processes required to better manage and improve performance.

The AOM Method:

• Facilitates cooperation within teams and departments, making it easier to achieve the collective goals of the organisation

• Develops confident and timely decision-making through the regular creation and monitoring of capacity plans

• Provides management teams with a single view of performance across the operation

• Allows management teams to compare actual with desired performance

• Improves the visibility and use of capacity in the organisation

• Encourages teams to achieve the best possible performance they can, and then exceed it

• Helps identify opportunities for performance improvement ahead of time, so that they can be harnessed directly

• Provides a firm foundation for other business improvement initiatives.

ToolsAOM

AOM Tools are packaged into an easy-to-use, yet powerful, cloud-based applications suite called Workware™. Workware provides managers with a real-time view into the status of work and staff, as well as the ability to plan and forecast workloads based on actual performance data and assumptions.

The Workware suite:

• Allows the capture of production data and the creation of capacity plans at any level of the organisation

• Offers powerful executive dashboards for easy graphical representation of data and trend analysis

• Is simple and easy to use, with intuitive user interfaces and simple data entry facilities

• Is provided securely via a web browser on a Software as a Service basis

• Requires no costly IT implementation project, hardware purchases, support or maintenance.

AOM Tools convert data into information and, together with the AOM Method, provide skilled managers with the intelligence and ability to make confident decisions.

SkillsAOM

AOM Skills:

• Are taught during initial implementation of AOM, which is usually completed in 12–16 weeks

• Cover the competencies to become an active operations manager

• Include classroom training, on and off-the-job coaching, and eLearning provided through the ‘AOM Academy’

• Enable AOM best practice to be incorporated into daily routines

• Are maintained via a sustainability programme that follows AOM implementation

• Teach managers the fundamentals of operations management using AOM practices, allowing them to complete a formal certification route with an internationally recognised awarding body.

AOM Skills equip managers with the relevant competencies and behaviours to actively manage their staff at an individual level. They allow managers to make better-informed decisions and provide a framework for effective communication and feedback.

AOM How

can work for you

Implementation The AOM Method, Skills and Tools are taught and embedded into your organisation as part of a 12–16 week AOM implementation programme. This programme introduces and integrates AOM into your weekly, monthly and annual planning and control processes. Your managers will attend workshops that introduce the AOM Method and will receive one-to-one training and coaching, supported by eLearning. Through our tried-and-tested AOM implementation process, your managers will gain the confidence to apply the AOM concepts and tools in their own unique environment.

Accreditation and Certification

The AOM approach is transforming the world of service operations by providing unprecedented levels of control over quality, productivity and service delivery, and raising the standard of competence and performance in operations management. In order to recognise the AOM skills and knowledge gained by participants in an AOM implementation, we have developed our own accreditation and certification programme. This means that participants who receive training in AOM Skills have the opportunity to complete a formal certification route with an internationally recognised awarding body.

SustainabilityThe AOM sustainability package ensures that your initial gains are repeatable, sustainable and embedded into the infrastructure of your business. The package involves a range of on-site services that aim to refresh the AOM Skills of current managers over time and train new members of staff. Specifically, the package includes the following services:

• AOM Business Simulation training for new team leaders

• ‘Workware Experience’ training for new team leaders

• AOM Accreditation and Certification

• Refresher training

• Periodical on-site Diagnostic Reviews

• Support for your organisation’s annual planning process

• Contact with our relationship management team, who will provide ongoing advice and support.

BenefitsThe benefits of AOM are realised very quickly, with results experienced even within the first 6–8 weeks of implementation. Benefits in the first year generally consist of productivity improvements in the region of 15%–40%.

While these initial productivity improvements can generate significant savings, the first benefit arising from an AOM implementation is often increased control over the operation. This increased control allows active, confident choices to be made at all levels of management. It also allows spare capacity to be used to drive change, develop skills, and improve service and quality. Ultimately, this leads to a better outcome for the customer.

Organisations typically reach break-even on their investment within 9 months, generally achieving a 12-month ROI in excess of 200%. And the initial results are just the start—organisations using AOM consistently achieve year-on-year benefits, which form the basis for a more efficient and effective business overall.
