A clutch =

o A mechanical device which provide for the transmission of power (motion) from one component to another (wikipedia)

o A coupling that connects or disconnects driving (motor) and driven (wheels) parts of a driving mechanism

A clutch =

o Rigid connection (if connected)

o Dry clutch: contactareas are dry

Flywheel

o Function• Starts and keeps motor spinning• Large spinning contactarea• Placement of other components

o Essential• mass• Large contactarea

o Connection• Rigid with crankshaft

Clutch Plate

o Function• transmit power from flywheel to gearbox input shaft• Do nothing

o Essential• Friction material• Chock absorption• Wear resistance

o Connection• Radial fixed with gearbox input shaft: splined shaft

• If connected: rigid with flywheel and pressure plate by friction

Pressure Group

o Funtion• Squeeze clutch plate between 2 spinning areas

o Essential• Large contactarea• Delivre/release pressure

o Parts• Housing• Pressure plate• Diaphragm spring

o Connection• Housing rigid with flywheel result: speed pressure group = speed flywheel = speed motor

Pressure Group – Diaphragm spring

o Funtion• Push pressure plate to clutch plate

o Essential• Strong and reliable• Delivre/release pressure

o Connection• Radial fixed with housing by studs

• Rigid with pressure plate

Release fork and bearing

o Function• Connection between pedal and clutch• Lever

o Essential• Strong• No friction between fork and spring: bearing

o Connection• Hinge between clutch housing and fork• Hydraulical or mecanical with clutchpedal

Optimization

A CAR CLUTCHFor dummies

18/19

o 1 big problem!

Oil will destroy your clutch due to:• friction (difference in speed)• Heat

o Positioning the different parts

o Optimization of the clutch plate

o mass

Conclusion

A CAR CLUTCHFor dummies

19/19

It’s a well thought product. It has proven his utility.

Difficult to optimize, the principle is already used for decades. What do they do now: flywheel and clutch plate optimization.

The future?Does an electric car use a clutch?
