Qandidate.com
Qandidate has made the recruitment process much easier. Our old
hiring system was overly complicated and frustrating to use. I love
Qandidate for the simplicity and reliability. They make their money
posting vacancies to different media sites, so the actual tool is
completely free. Two thumbs up from me! — EMILY
Using this tool is great for keeping track of everyone. After an interview,
I can write my notes or introduce the applicant to other people in my
company. Logging the recruitment data is a neat feature too. It’s great
to see our hiring rates over time. — CAITLIN

Release Date: August 2013
Usage Data: 30,000+ teams using Slack
Platform/Tech: Mac, iOS, Android, Web browser
Features: File sharing, real time discussions, conversation and top archives,
complete history search
Everyday, emails arrive and clutter your inbox. Communications are
easily lost or forgotten as mail piles up. Slack was conceived by Tiny Speck
Company, who was searching for a truly efficient method of professional
communication. Unlike email, Slack allows team members to share ideas in
real time. Chat rooms are “hash-tagged” to specific topics, where everyone
can share files and links. Slack can also host non-employees for collaboration
on dedicated projects. Larger corporations will probably shy away from
Slack because communication is naturally more relaxed and open. Slack is a
multi-platform app, featuring real-time communication, topic search, and file
sharing history. 8ninths uses Slack and we love it. Slack us!

Slack
Slack’s file integrations with Dropbox and Google Drive work great. It is
incredibly easy to search for files or old conversations. I always have the
desktop app open. It makes internal communication much faster and
efficient. — EMILY
After working in corporate office environments and understanding the
struggle to find ‘that one email’, transitioning to Slack has been a piece
of cake. I can quickly search and reference files or a conversation that
sparked an idea. Email has it’s place, but for our team, it’s Slack all the
way. — CAITLIN

Displio
Having a visual notification tool is really handy. Rather than searching
for my phone or pulling out a computer, I can easily see any updates.
The size is a big factor for me. I like that Displio is small enough to throw
in my purse so I can use it between home and work. — EMILY
Since you only have to rotate it on its side to change widgets, Displio
could be a great tool for someone with limited dexterity. It is so simple
to use, it is easy to see why it was a successful crowd funded project. —

DJI Phantom 2 Vision+
I first used this drone last summer on a windy hill in park by the coast.
I was amazed by how easy it was to fly on my first attempt, especially
with the wind factor. The range of the drone is very impressive. It would
fly beyond my eyesight, yet I could look on my phone screen and view
everythingthe camera was seeing. The camera’s unique perspective
created really, incredible pictures. While I have not tried the drone
models without camera stabilization, I can’t imagine the footage would
have come out so clear — EMILY

Release Date: April 2014
Platform/Tech: iOS 6.1 or above, Android 4.0 or above
Features: Full HD video, GPS enabled radar positioning & return home, real-
time flight parameters, camera stabilization, no-fly zone features, Adobe lens
profile support, 90 degree camera tilt
MORE CONTEXTIn April 2014, DJI released an upgraded version of its popular consumer
drone, the Phantom 2 Vision+. The simplicity of the controls and thoughtful
configuration works to eliminate the challenges of first time flying. While
flying, the drone uses GPS to alert operators to no-fly zones. If the drone
exceeds controller range, ‘Return-to-Home’ is activated and the Vision+ will
automatically fly itself to its original takeoff point. Next to its sister model,
the Vision+ maintains many of the same key features with one significant
upgrade, the incorporation of camera stabilization. By including a gimbal (a
mechanism for keeping an instrument horizontal) the Vision+ has resulted in
steadier pictures and videos in comparison with its predecessors.

HoloLens
Virtual reality seems to be the future of gaming, but I see more
practical uses with the HoloLens. The interactivity between reality and
technology creates a new space for ideation, creation, and learning. I
wonder if the HoloLens will be the YouTube-learning of the future. —
EMILY
“Blending worlds” is a main selling point of the HoloLens. I’m excited to
see what user-friendly applications they come out with in the next few
years. I’m sure soon it will start to replace some traditional home tech,
like my TV. — CAITLIN

Usage Data: Unknown
Platform/Tech: Windows 10
Features: Holographic googles, wireless, augmented reality, full HD camera,
3D printer capabilities
MORE CONTEXTThe tech industry has been bustling with excitement as new developments
in virtual reality emerge. As major tech companies like Facebook and Sony
develop their virtual reality headsets, Microsoft has begun to occupy the
space of augmented reality. Unlike the Oculus Rift and the Samsung Gear VR,
which produce full virtual immersion, Microsoft’s HoloLens allows users to
interact with holograms in the physical world. HoloLens crosses the lines of
AR and VR by projecting a virtual environment onto the user’s physical space.
The applications for this technology could greatly affect anything from
neurosurgery to roof repair and would even make Tony Stark jealous.

LaMetric
The functionality of this dashboard is handy for developers and tech-
savvy individuals that want to program their own custom notifications.
I can also see it being useful for anyone wanting to keep up on new
updates. I am a visual person, so I like LaMetric’s big text and various
colors because they are easy to recognize with different alerts. — EMILY
I’m most drawn to the appearance of LaMetric. It’s bright and cheerful,
so I have a happy buddy to sit next to me while I work. I find the
dashboard very helpful for reminding me of my schedule. I like that it
shows the weather or lets me know when an email arrives. — CAITLIN

allows you to create your own notifications. At first glance, LaMetric looks like
your parent’s old bedroom digital clock. The chunky pixel display looks like a
classic video game from the late 80s, like something seen in an early Super
Mario Bros. The little desk dashboard allows you to program your widgets,
maintain RSS updates, and produces audio messages through the handy
phone app. LaMetric is bluetooth enabled to stream music for an impromptu
dance party- totally not your mom’s alarm clock.

Samsung Galaxy S6 & S6 Edge
Visually, the phone is very exciting, but the edges lack functionality to
really be a ‘wow’ factor. Although the edges seem somewhat novel,
the Edge is a much better phone than the standard S6. I am more
impressed by the new features of the phone than by the curved screen
itself. The messaging app pops up when I get a text and I can reply
without leaving the screen I am on. The split screen, quick launch
camera and multi-screen window are three of my favorite features.
The camera takes amazing pictures and the high definition screen is
stunning. — EMILY

MORE CONTEXTReleased earlier this April, the new Samsung Galaxy S6 and S6 Edge are
curving the way towards the future of smartphones. When it was announced
in March 2015, a hardware redesign excited the tech community as Samsung
expanded the touchscreen of the Galaxy phone to include touch edges. This
new space phone the latest in the Galaxy series along with its sister phone
the traditional, non-edge S6. Unlike previous versions, Samsung has done
away with the removable plastic backing and opted for Gorilla glass and metal
detailing. While the new materials are a highly anticipated change for Galaxy
fans, many are disappointed the battery is no longer replaceable and the
option for an external memory card is gone.

created to help build and manage your schedule. For those who schedule their shifts

a tap, and share your calendar with family members to help them stay on track with
you. Exclusively on iOS, the app integrates seamlessly with your calendar and helps
you create your schedule, fast.

forever to enter in the data. An app that is functional and simple has a
big market for shift-based industries. — EMILY
