6 Reasons to Migrate to SharePoint 2013

Microsoft has always been ahead of the curve in bringing new technologies and capabilities

which enable users to get maximum advantage and ease of business processes. The new

versions of SharePoint have got some new features which have not only won the confidence of

the users but also made the complex projects easier. As a matter of fact, SharePoint has seen

widespread adoption across all types of organizations. Around 78% of fortune 500 companies

are using SharePoint. This shows that SharePoint has become a favourite platform for the users.

SharePoint 2010 brought us some major changes, and SharePoint 2013 continues that trend by

introducing some new cutting edge features for web content management, workflow, search,

and big data.

Few reasons for migrating to SharePoint 2013

It has been seen that companies which have been using other platforms like Lotus, Oracle etc.

are keen for SharePoint migration and those which have been using the older versions of

SharePoint now upgrading to SharePoint 2013. There is a list of some of its features which are

compelling organizations to take this leap.

1. Apps for SharePoint

The apps for SharePoint allow users to add quick functionality to their site without much

intervention. Site owners can add apps for SharePoint to their sites or remove them

whenever they want. Apps for SharePoint have an isolated URL so they do not open

your environment to cross-site scripting risks. Organization can develop its own apps for

SharePoint, or can make apps available from the SharePoint Store, or easily update apps

whenever available.

Office Web apps are free for both internal and external users, also to note, Office Web

apps now work on mobile devices like the iPad.

2. Improved Workflow

A new add-on called “Workflow Manager” can be downloaded and installed separately,

that runs on its own server and has its own databases for the manager itself and the

Service Bus respectively. Now creating workflows for SharePoint 2013 has become

easier because of the addition of Task Process Designer canvas that uses a Visio 2013

add-in within SharePoint Designer 2013.

Microsoft have bought Yammer and recently released the Yammer integration

roadmap. Yammer integration will work in place of SharePoint Newsfeed replacing it

entirely.

4. Big data support

SharePoint 2013 allows for much larger data sets with the help of integrated PowerPivot

technology. The large data sets can be compressed and filtered while in memory on the

server, allowing operations on the data occur very fast. User can leverage Power View

data modeling for large data sets to create visualizations with charts, graphs, runtime

data filtering, and slicers.

5. Improved Publishing Capabilities via Cross-Site Publishing

The cross-site publishing for web content management enhances the authoring and

publishing processes of organizations. It helps you to store, maintain or change content

in one or more authoring site collections, and display this content on all site collections

that are reusing the content.

6. Improved Design Capabilities

SharePoint 2013 Server includes new and improved features for designing your sites and

laying out content by simply dragging and dropping menu items, branding SharePoint

sites with external tool like Dreamweaver and so on.
