How do we describe the
Carpet python?• The Carpet Python can reach up to between 2
to 4 metres in length and weigh up to 15
kilograms.
• They are long, slender snakes with compressed
bodies.
• Carpet Pythons are native to Australia and New
Guinea.
• Carpet Pythons like to remain in ambient
temperatures that are between 76 and 80
degrees Fahrenheit.
How does it move? They don't have legs they use their muscles and
their scales to do the "walking".
They are rather slow moving powerful
constrictors.
Because carpet pythons are slow and orderly in
their movements, they can be maintained in
terraria smaller that those recommended for
many other snakes of similar size.
How does it camouflage on its
own? A carpet python has a distinctive color pattern
that allows the snake the ability to camouflage
itself against the natural background and
ambush prey or hide from predators.
The base color of a carpet python is light brown,
beige, or tan with darker circles, stripes, or bands
of brown, gray, yellow, gold, rust, and black.
How does it reproduce?
The species is oviparous, with females laying 10-
50 eggs at a time. Afterward, females coil
around the eggs to protect them and keep
them warm through using muscular contractions
to generate heat. This type of maternal care,
which is typical for pythons, ceases once the
hatchlings have emerged.
How long does it live?
The Carpet Python has become a treasured pet
for many people.. Adult carpet snakes can
reach lengths of 1.5-2M in captivity. They have a
life span between 20 - 30 years.
How does it hibernate and
how long does the hibernate
last?Carpet python's do not hibernate. They are not
a colubrid.
It might become a little less active through the
winter months.
How does its behaviour like?
They are largely nocturnal, climbing trees and
shrubs as well as crossing open areas such as
rock faces, forest floors and even roads.
However, basking behaviour is commonly
observed.
What does it feed on?
The diet consists mainly of
small mammals, bats, birds and lizards.
Carpet Python kills prey by constricting it until it
suffocates. It is often the largest predator in its
ecological niche.
What does it use to attack
people?
It uses its Snake venom which has highly
modified saliva containing zootoxins used by
snakes to immobilize and digest prey or to serve
as a defence mechanism against a
potential predator or other threat.
Where is its habitat?
It has a wide variety of habitats like the rainforests of
northeastern Queensland through the River Red
Gum of the Murray and Darling Rivers, to the arid,
treeless islands of the Nuyts Archipelago off the
South Australian west coast.
It is often found near human habitation where they
perform a useful service by eating rats and other
vermin.
Carpet Python know to occur in areas that receive
snowfall.
Carpet pythons are also found in temperate
grasslands with hot and dry weather.
Group Reflection
Our group is very co-operative although we
tend to have some troubles due to our time
being very tight. Our group members are
very responsible as they did their job very
well to produce this project.
