CDM B&I APPLICATIONS

CDM is making your world a quieter place...!

CDM is a Belgian company, with HQ in Overijse (Flanders region), having several subsiduaries worldwide, ISO- 9001 certified

Since 1951 CDM has specialized in mitigation measures for noise and vibration for buildings, industry and track infrastructure in applications worldwide

CDM has grown steadily over the past 25 years thanks to a change in its business approach: from <10 to >100 employees in a niche market

Until the late 80’s: approach of CDM (Pronouvo):

“in-house” production of thermo-plastic corks for N & V isolation

perceived by the market mainly as a materials manufacturer

limited set of sellable products

lot of (international) competition, often with better products

financial difficulties...!

At the end of the 80’s: new director (Patrick Carels) profoundly changed the business approach of the company:

“carpet seller”

“engineered solutions that comply with the real needs of the customer”

How? ... CDM’s 4 “corner stones”...:

1) Creation of strategical alliances with different large international production companies of elastomers, thereby developping with them new product families for N & V isolation products to replace the own thermoplastic corks

fitting these new product families into a global overview table which is logic and very simple to understand for the customers

covering more than 80% of the N & V situations...

2) Creation of an own test lab

checking the mechanical characteristics of the new products (quality control + new developments)

checking the N & V performances of complete setups

(e.g. floating floors systems, lift decoupling systems, embedded rail systems, lighting posts,...)

more in-depth understanding of the physics behind, to develop new materials and systems which are more compact for instance than the competitor (e.g. CDM-83)

How?

3) Creation of extended “in-house” engineering support service

looking at the N & V problem from the viewpoint of the customer, and generating different solutions based on complete customized systems to suit the real needs of the customer; the type of material used is inferior to the system

accompanied by solid “in-house” drawing support in both 2D and 3D

How?

4) By looking across technological borders:

A. also adopting solutions with steel springs and air cushions in order to offer a complete set of N & V solutions to the customer:

- 5Hz < fr elastomer families (ca. 80%)

- 2,5Hz < fr < 5Hz steel springs (ca. 15%)

- fr < 2,5Hz air cushions (ca. 5%)

B. Widening the technical possibilities of current elastomer systems: the “frozen bearing technique”

Such “flexible soilscreens” + some other products (at the rail infrastructure) are the outcome of the EU-subsidized international R&D project called CARGOVIBES (1/4/2011 til 1/4/2014), being part of the 7th framework programme...

Other similar subsidized projects that CDM has been involved in:

- Urban Track (EU)

- QCity (EU)

- Soilvibes (Oseo)

- dB deck (IWT)

usually CDM is not taking the lead in this but is asked by an international partner (consultant / research institute / university / track operator / ...) to join a certain consortium if interested

essential to obtain this: maintain permanently close contacts with these companies / organisms + show a strong drive for innovation / R&D

However, up to now, such projects were always rather “heavy” from the viewpoint of administration: difficult and long procedure to be finally accepted / lots of international meetings with involved partners to attend / many follow up reports on performed man-months / several audits and reviews / sometimes political discussions / ...

hopefully “Horizon 2020” will indeed be more flexible, as is generally hoped for, but here as well CDM will not take the lead as there’s still lots of products (= result of such large R&D projects) that must first be developed further in order to be sellable...

However, CDM is always open for international innovation proposals in case considered sufficiently interesting...

Apart from this, innovation at CDM is today mainly realized via:

MARKET PULL: via a worldwide network of own agencies or independent partners which are:

1) confronted with ever changing challenges on specific N & V situations

creative solutions required that sometimes result in a standard product or system!

2) constantly studying successful developments of competitors in local markets

have an answer ready asap in order to keep a good local market positioning + go worldwide with it (often patent check required!)

Conclusions:

- materials-based approach engineered solution approach

- offering a wide pallet of different solutions

- focus on fully customized / engineered packages (= + value!):

* elastomers + “dummy materials” = system

* full lab support (solution check, quality control,...)

* full engineering support

* 2D and 3D drawings for installation

- fairly independant from individual material suppliers, since there’s always several possibilities now to solve the problem

- “Customer Intimacy” business model: CDM stands much closer to its customers than certain competitors that offer only springs / only PU mats / only catalog elements
