2016 SCHEDULE/RESULTS 2016 NCAA S.C. REGIONALS • SCHAEFFER PARK • MAY 5-7 • CANYON, TEXAS

METRO STATEThe Roadrunners enter the weekend with an overall record of 35-17 after claiming the 2016 Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference Tournament Title last weekend in Grand Junction, Colorado.

Metro State is led by third year head coach Annie Van Wetzinga who has led the Roadrunners to their third straight appearance in the NCAA Division II Postseason.

The Roadrunners are led offensively by Sarena Espinoza who is hitting .378 this season with 20 doubles and four homeruns to drive in 44 RBI for a slugging% of .583. In the circle, Metro State is paced by Cassidy Smith who is 13-10 on the season with a 3.34 ERA and 11 complete games to go along with 57 strikeouts in her 165.2 innings of work with a .297 opponent batting average.

MSUD is hitting .324 as a team to go along with 88 doubles, 22 triples, 25 homeruns and 285 RBI for a team slugging percentage of .466 with 70 combined errors for a fielding clip of .956 while stealing 81 bases this season. In the circle, MSUD has a 3.72 combined ERA with 20 complete games and six shutouts with 147 strikeouts in 346.0 innings with an opposing batting average of .308.

LADY BUFFS IN THE NCAA TOURNAMENTThe Lady Buffs will be making their fourth straight and six overall appearance in the NCAA Division II Softball postseason. WT is hosting the South Central Regional for the fifth time this weekend at Schaeffer Park.

Coach Blaskowski and the Lady Buffs are 18-11 all-time in the NCAA Postseason including 11-7 in games played at Schaeffer Park with a pair of South Central I Regional Titles and the 2014 NCAA Division II National Championship.

NFCA DIVISION II TOP-25 POLL (MAY 4)Coming off of their second straight Lone Star Conference Tournament Championship on Saturday afternoon, the Lady Buffs of West Texas A&M are the unanimous number

one in the newest and final regular season National Fastpitch Coaches Association (NFCA) Division II Top-25 Poll announced on Wednesday morning by the association’s offices in Louisville, Kentucky.

The Lady Buffs picked up all 16 first place votes for a perfect total of 400 points followed by Indianapolis (384), North Alabama (365), North Georgia (351), Humboldt State (337), Missouri-St. Louis (313), Arkansas Tech (304), Saint Leo (276), St. Mary’s (268) and Wayne State (260) to round out the top-ten. The South Central Region was represented by WT, St. Mary’s (9th), Texas Woman’s (T-25th) and Texas A&M-Commerce.

NATIONALLY SPEAKING (MAY 1)The Lady Buffs have the nation’s best offense with a .367 team batting average while leading the nation with 2.26 doubles per game, a .471 on base percentage while scoring 8.94 runs per contest.

– WT ranks first in slugging percentage (.629) while coming in third with 1.41 homeruns per game and ranking first in win/loss percentage at .963.

– Senior Stacey Ramirez ranks 27th in the country in batting average (.442) and seventh in runs per game (1.19). Fellow senior Tori Bayer leads Division II in saves this season with 10 and ranks 13th in ERA (1.12) while Lacey Taylor ranks sixth in on-base percentage (.561) and fifth in walks per game (0.93).

– Sophomore outfielder Ashley Hardin leads the Lady Buffs with 19 home runs which ranks sixth in the nation. WT has four players in the Top-50 in RBI this season with Hardin (6th, 65), Brittany Cruz (8th, 63), Shea Ibrahim (46th, 50)and Taylor (46th, 50).

A LOOK BACK (LSC CHAMPIONSHIP RECAP)The Lady Buffs ran their win streak to 16 games this past weekend as they outlasted the rival Belles of Angelo State in the LSC Semifinals as a 9th inning Hardin walkoff bomb finished a 6-5 decision before the powerful WT offense hit five homeruns in a 9-6 win over Texas Woman’s for the LSC Title as Hardin was named the Tournament MVP.

HOME SWEET HOMEThe Lady Buffs have turned Schaeffer Park in Canyon into one of the top home environments in all of NCAA Division II Softball. WT is 170-27 (.863) at Schaeffer Park since the facility opened prior to the 2011 season including 71-13 (.845) during regular season Lone Star Conference games in Canyon. 2016 marks the fifth time in the last six years (‘11, ‘13, ‘14, ‘15, ‘16) that the Lady Buffs host NCAA Postseason action.

MAKING HISTORYThe Lady Buffs became the fastest team in Division II to reach the 50-win plateau this season while becoming just be 19th team in Division II History to register a win streak of atleast 30 games as they are tied for 10th with Sacred Heart (1990) and Kennesaw State (1999). The 30-game win streak is the longest in LSC history and the longest ever in the current South Central Region (Lone Star, Heartland, RMAC).

LSC SOFTBALL AWARDS11 members of the Lone Star Conference Champi-on Lady Buffs were honored for their performance on the diamond and in the classroom as the league announced their annual postseason softball awards. Lacey Taylor, Kilee Halbert (Pitcher of the Year), Stacey Ramirez, Allie Smith, Ashley Hardin and Tori Bayer were named to the All-LSC First Team while Brittany Cruz (Freshman of the Year), Brittany Gehle and Shea Ibrahim (Newcomer of the Year) picked up Second Team honors. Freshmen Shayne Starkey and Kourtney Coveney were named to the Third Team while Halbert, Gehle and Ibrahim were all named a Golden Glove selection at their respective positions. On the academic side, Halbert becomes the first Lady Buff in program history to be named the LSC Academic Player of the Year as the Dalhart native holds a perfect 4.0 GPA in Nursing. WT head coach Kevin Blaskowski picked up his third Lone Star Conference Coach of the Year honor.

2016 LSC LEADERS (REGULAR SEASON - FINAL)



Having been hired to re-start West Texas A&M softball following a 24-year absence, Kevin Blaskowski has wast-ed little time in building the Lady Buffs into a perennial national title contender. In 10 years at the helm, he has

registered a 365-230 mark, recorded five NCAA tournament berths and an overall record of 717-507 over 23 seasons. While at WT, Blaskowski has claimed three Lone Star Conference title, two LSC Tournament Title, two South Central Regional Championships, a South Central Super Regional Title and the 2014 NCAA Division II National Championship. The Lady Buffs continued their dominance in 2015 as Blaskowski led the program to their second straight and third overall Lone Star Conference Championship as they finished the season 45-11 with a 22-6 mark in LSC play. WT made national news during the 2015 season, remaining the top team in the National Fastpitch Coaches Association (NFCA) Division II Top-25 Poll for a record 56-straight weeks (2/26/14 - 3/25/15). WT led the nation in four offensive statustical categories during the 2015 season while also hitting 102 homeruns to become the first team in Division II history to reach the century mark in back-to-back years after hitting 105 bombs in 2014. Senior outfielder Renee Erwin concluded her incredible collegiate career in style as the Anna, Texas native became the first player in history to be named a back-to-back winner of the Daktronics Ron Lenz National Player of the Year award. 2014 saw the Lady Buffs capture the program’s first ever NCAA Division II National Championship as WT topped perennial power Valdosta State in a Memorial Day thriller at the Moyers Sports Complex in Salem, Virginia. The Lady Buffs finished their dream season with an overall record of 60-7, becoming just the fourth team in NCAA history to win a title while also reaching the 60-win mark (Cal State Northridge-1985; Augustana-1991; North Dakota State-2000). Blaskowski and his staff were rewarded for their efforts on the diamond, being named the National Fastpitch Coaches Association (NFCA) Division II National Coaching Staff of the Year while Coach B also picked up Lone Star Confer-ence Coach of the Year accolades. Coach B reached another career milestone in 2013 as he claimed his 600th career victory against St. Edward’s in Austin, Texas on April 14th. The 2012 season saw the Lady Buffs make another appearance in the LSC Tournament before falling to rival Angelo State in the semifinal round, WT just missed out on the NCAA Postseason, finishing the season with an overall record of 35-18. Blaskowski reached a personal milestone on February 19, 2012 as he coached his 1,000th career game in a win over New Mexico Highlands in Canyon. The 2011 season saw the Lady Buffs make a historic run to their first ever South Central Regional Championship as they finished the season with an overall record of 50-18. WT claimed the program’s first ever Lone Star Confer-ence Tournament Championship in 2011. Blaskowski also reached a personal milestone in 2011, claiming his 500th career victory on March 5 in a 15-2 win over Eastern New Mexico at Lady Buff Yard in Canyon, the win was also special for WT’s centerfielder Kim LeComte who hit for the first cycle in program history. The Lady Buffs finished the 2010 season with a 45-18 overall record and ad-vanced to the NCAA South Central Region Finals. Blaskowski was honored as the Lone Star Conference South Division Coach of the Year. Blaskowski was hired in December of 2004 to bring back the softball program to WTAMU’s campus after a 24 year absence. Blaskowski came to WT from Lone Star Conference rival Eastern New Mexico University where he served as the head coach for one year. Prior to ENMU, Blaskowski coached at Southern Arkansas University for five years, where he started the SAU softball program and led them to the postseason in each of his five years. In 2003, SAU was the Co-Champion of the West Division in the Gulf South Conference with

a 31-19 overall record and a 19-4 conference mark. While at SAU, Blaskowski served as a member of the NCAA Division II South Region rating committee in addition to being named Gulf South Confer-ence Co-Coach of the Year in 2000. Blaskowski also has served as the head coach at Phillips Univer-sity from 1996-1998. He started the program at Phillips which qualified for postseason play in each of its two seasons before the school closed in 1998. He was also the head coach at Washburn Univer-sity in Topeka, Kan., and Kansas Wesleyan University, in Salina, Kan. Blaskowski received a Bachelor of Science in Education with a major in Physical Education from Valley City State University in North Dakota in 1986. He completed a Master of Science in Education with an emphasis in Health, Physi-cal Education and Recreation at Emporia State University in Kansas in 1989. Blaskowski and his beautiful wife, April, are the parents of two daughters, Kaelyn Rose and Kelsey Rhea.
