All the participants form a circle, the leader stands in the middle of the circle with a “fishing-rod” (a skipping rope).

Page 4: Traditional games Latvia

The leader turns the “fishing-rod” round the circle. The participants try not to touch the skipping rod by jumping up. If the rod touches somebody, that participant quits the game.

The game ends when only a few participants are left. They are the winners.

First pairs need to join hands and to line one after the other, one game player - leader stands in front of the column.

Page 8: Traditional games Latvia

After the leader – catcher command: “Last pair - part!”, the last pair separates and runs to the front, each runner along the other side of the column, and in front of the line tries to join hands with the partner. The catcher tries to catch one of them.

Page 9: Traditional games Latvia

Player who isn`t caught stands in front of the column and becomes a catcher. The pair stands in front as well, but the catcher is leading.

A volleyball pitch can be used or a smaller one if the number of participants is not so large. The participants form two groups and choose the captains. They draw lots who will start the game. The teams stand freely across the two halves of the pitch, but the captains stand outside the opponents’ pitch end line. The captain, who has the first throw, takes the ball.

Page 14: Traditional games Latvia

After the signal the captain tries to hit somebody from the opponents’ team or passes the ball to players of his team. When they catch the ball, they try to do the same. The opponents try to escape the ball or try to catch it. If they manage to catch it, they start to hit out the other team’s players. If the ball hits somebody, that player goes to help his captain.

Page 15: Traditional games Latvia

If the opposing player catches the ball, he frees somebody who is standing with their captain, i.e., one player comes back to the pitch. If all the players have been hit out, the captain goes to the pitch. If he is hit, the game is over. The teams change places, the first throw goes to the team which has lost.

Players can’t step over the side lines. If the ball falls out of hands, when the player tries to catch it, that is counted as a hit. A hit is successful if the ball hits a player from the air, before touching the ground. If the ball falls in the pitch, it can be picked up only by the players on the pitch. If the ball falls outside the line, it is handed over to the closest standing captain.

Participants - “fishes” take free positions in the marked place. Two leading “fishermen” with hands joined, stand at the edge of the field.

Page 19: Traditional games Latvia

After the signal fishermen start to catch the fish, every hunted participant joins them making the fishing net bigger.

Result: the game ends when all the fish are caught . The winners are those participants who are caught the last.

A circle should be drawn on the ground, the circle should be 3-4 metres in diameter. The participants should split in two teams that will stand in two queues on each side of the circle.

Page 24: Traditional games Latvia

One player from each team goes in the circle and stands on one foot about 1.5 metre away from each other, their hands can be put together at the back or one hand can be used to hold the raised up leg but the free hand goes behind his/her back.

Page 25: Traditional games Latvia

After the signal “roosters", the players start to jump on one leg and with their shoulders try to push the opponent out of the circle or make the opponent stand on both feet. The winner gets one point for their team. After that, other two players go (from each team one) to play the same game. And so on until all the players have played the game.

The participants form a circle, along their feet a circle is drawn. Participants count on “One-two” and form two teams. The first- “Ducks”, stand in the middle of the circle, “Hunters” stand outside the circle. One of the “Hunters” holds a soft ball.

Page 30: Traditional games Latvia

After the signal hunters try to hit the ducks. The one, that is hit, leaves the circle and joins the hunters. The ducks can run round the circle in any direction trying to escape the hit of the ball. When all the ducks have been hunted, the teams change places.

It is allowed for “ducks” to catch the ball. The player gets additional “life”.

The winner is the team which spends less time hitting out all the ducks.
