• A Nielsen employee contacted Oxfordshire Sports Partnership to find out if they could help them set up some sports provision at their annual staff community day.

• The CSP lead used the contact as an opportunity to see if there was scope to deliver a Sport Makers event as part of the day.

• The employee set up a meeting between the CSP lead and a senior representative at Nielsen.

• They discussed how the programme would work and what the benefits would be for Nielsen staff. The CSP lead also offered Nielsen, an Olympic sponsor, the chance for staff to volunteer at the Olympic torch relay.

• The CSP then agreed to deliver a Sport Makers event to Nielsen staff with the Nielsen employee responsible for marketing and recruiting Sport Makers using promotional material supplied by the CSP.

What worked?

• Building relationships with key staff members – By holding face-to-face meetings with key staff members at different levels of the organisation, the CSP was able to establish the company’s needs and tailor their Sport Makers offer.

• Using different messages when marketing Sport Makers to different people – the CSP tailored their messaging to sell the programme more effectively in the following way:• Management – focus on overall benefits of the programme

such as teamwork, community engagement, staff morale.• Employees – focus on the programme being an opportunity

to pursue personal interests, support the local community or an opportunity to be more physically active with friends.

• Linking Sport Makers to other events – the chance to volunteer at the torch relay was an incentive for staff to take part. Involvement in the company’s community day allowed a day off for staff, so linking with the delivery of it allowed them easy access to take part in Sport Makers.

• Allowing staff to take part in the event without registering online first – the Nielsen employee instead collected names and email addresses on a spreadsheet. Byng uploaded this data to register Sport Makers online, before the CSP notified Sport Makers of their login details.

• Keeping staff aware of the CSP’s next open event – this enabled some staff, who weren’t able to attend to the workplace event, to still take part in the programme.

What didn’t work?

• Not placing enough focus on recording hours during the event - only 10% of Nielsen Sport Makers have so far recorded their hours even though 100% of them completed five hours of activity at the torch relay.

• 60 Sport Makers attended the event.

• All Sport Makers completed five hours of activity at the torch relay.

• Seven Sport Makers have recorded their hours online – the CSP is currently encouraging the rest to record their hours.

• Sport Makers have started regular workplace running groups, rounders sessions and have developed their existing table tennis sessions. One group has also been assisted by Sport Makers Ambassador, Sue Wright, and now play squash at a local facility.
