General PrinciplesWhether sitting deep, counter-pressing or pressing hard, it

is all about recognising:

1. What YOUR TEAM is doing

(Shoud you to drop off, press hard, or counter-press?)

2. Where the opposition players are

(One player should be focused on pressing the ball, the others should have their head up, looking at how the other

team are positioned.

Pressing is DEFINITELY NOT about one player rushing the ball!

1. Sitting deep

o Pressing as an individual is a waste of energy.o Sometimes the press is not ono In the follow clip, Firmino (striker) starts the

press, then realises his team are sitting deep.o Because they're sitting deep, not pressing, HE

DROPS INTO A STRUCTURE.

2. Pressing

o Pressing is 1% about the player pressing the ball, and 99% about the supporting players pressing the players he can pass to.

o In the following clip, one liverpool player will “lead the press” by attacking the ball carrier.

o Watch the players (especially Lallana) pressing “THE NEXT MAN”.

o Don't believe me, watch Claudio Ranieri.

Gegenpressing (Counter-pressing)

o Gegen-pressing is the one situation where a player presses alone.

o It's not about winning the ball back.o It's about putting the ball-carrier under

pressure while the rest of your team gets into structure behind.

o It usually happens IMMEDIATELY after losing the ball.

o Watch Klopp, Conte, Mourinho, Allegri teams.
