Essex Boys

How Terry Winsor establishes the thriller genre in the title sequence of

“Essex boys”

Opening: NamesIn the opening title where the names of the actors are shown, scratches are also shown on the screen. The audience also hear the sound of the scratch already making them feel uneasy. The scratches could symbolise how this film will make the audience feel uncomfortable, just like ‘itching’ would.

Scene 1:Opens with a man who is located in a

garage.The location is dark which

could represent

bad intentions or even death.

A man alone in a dark

garage could be

illustrating a mystery

Scene 2:

The location is clearly

established in this shot.

The garage looks very dirty, this suggests

something malicious or

vile could happen.

The car could symbolise

independence, which could be a struggle for someone as

they could get trapped on their own.

Conventional.

Scene 3:Point of view shot – shows

distance. Jason looks

menacing; this makes the audience

anxious as they are

placed as the character in

the car.

Chiaroscuro lighting is used

here; this creates a mood of mystery.Costume: loud

shirt because it is bright. This

implies he doesn’t mind being noticed and

doesn’t really care about anything.

Scene 4:

This shot is located in a

tunnel which is a generic location in

thriller films. Enclosed space –

difficult to escape.

This shot shows the vanishing point at the end of the tunnel which could demonstrate ‘looking into

the barrel of a gun’

The tunnel could insinuate

aspects of a characters

subconscious, that they need to be aware.

Scene 5:

Lines across the

windscreen could

represent prison bars - entrapment

The use of lines could

also create a sense of

tension for the audience.

This scene could be

foreshadowing what is going

to occur.

Scene 6:

Low angle – position

shows how he has little

control.

This scene could also create an

atmosphere of shock and

danger.

This shot demonstrates

that he is weak.

Scene 7:

Generic location –

Essex Marshes, could

represent primeval and

predatory.

Muddy; creating a dull and negative atmosphere.

The miserable weather

could symbolise loneliness

and hopelessness.

Scene 8:

The victims clothes are extremely

dirty implying that

he feels shame.

The tide coming in

could insinuate

more danger is coming.

Uncomfortable ground,

indicating he also feels

uncomfortable in the situation with

Jason.

Scene 9:

Wide camera angle establishes

the whole location.

Isolation: lonely and no one

there to help.

Dull colours: creates a miserable

mood.
