“God’s Spirit-Filled People” A Sermon Series on Acts

“Living by the Power of the Holy Spirit”

Acts 2:1-21

June 8, 2014 - Pentecost Sunday Today is Pentecost Sunday -- what many Christians refer to as the birthday of the Christian church.

Acts 2:1-4 When Pentecost Day arrived, they were all together in one place. Suddenly a sound from heaven like the howling of a fierce wind filled the entire house where they were sitting. They saw what seemed to be individual flames of fire alighting on each one of them. They were all filled with the Holy Spirit and began to speak in other languages as the Spirit enabled them to speak. It required the disciples’ willingness and obedience to be used by the Spirit, but The Holy Spirit enabled them! The Good News of Jesus Christ was being proclaimed in every language imaginable. Acts 2:5-13

There were pious Jews from every nation under heaven living in Jerusalem. When they heard this sound, a crowd gathered. They were mystified because everyone heard them speaking in their native languages. They were surprised and amazed, saying, “Look, aren’t all the people who are speaking Galileans, every one of them? How then can each of us hear them speaking in our native language?... —we hear them declaring the mighty works of God in our own languages!” They were all surprised and bewildered. Some asked each other, “What does this mean?” Others jeered at them, saying, “They’re full of new wine!”

It was the fulfillment of God’s promises in His Holy Word… Luke 3:16 John replied to them all, “I baptize you with water, but the one who is more powerful than me is coming. I’m not worthy to loosen the strap of his sandals. He will baptize you with the Holy Spirit and fire. Acts 2:14-21 Peter stood with the other eleven apostles. He raised his voice and declared, “Judeans and everyone living in Jerusalem! Know this! Listen carefully to my words! These people aren’t drunk, as you suspect; after all, it’s only nine o’clock in the morning! Rather, this is what was spoken through the prophet Joel: In the last days, God says, “I will

pour out my Spirit on all people.Your sons and daughters will

prophesy. Your young will see visions. Your elders will dream

dreams. Even upon my servants, men and women, I will pour out my

Spirit in those days, and they will prophesy. I will cause wonders to

occur in the heavens aboveand signs on the earth below, blood and fire

and a cloud of smoke. The sun will be changed into darkness, and the

moon will be changed into blood, before the great and spectacular day

of the Lord comes. And everyone who calls on the name of the Lord will be saved. All Christians have that opportunity to be used by God in the same way that the first believers were!

For Personal or Group Reflection 1. Reflect on any times where you traveled in foreign countries and did not speak their language. What was that like? How did you feel when you heard someone speak in your own language? 2. Why did God wait until the Jewish harvest festival of Pentecost to give the Holy Spirit? 3. How does being filled with the Spirit relate to witnessing for Christ? 4. What is your experience in hearing others (or yourself) speak in other tongues? What were your thoughts or feelings about that? Can that still happen today? 5. When have you experienced an empowering from the Holy Spirit to witness for Jesus Christ? What was that like?

Adult Summer Sunday School:

Forgotten God: Reversing Our Tragic Neglect of the Holy Spirit

Begins 9 am, June 22 – August 5 in Room 11

In the name of the Father, the Son, and ... the Holy Spirit. We pray in the name of all three, but

how often do we live with an awareness of only the first two?

As Jesus ascended into heaven, He promised to send the Holy Spirit—the Helper—so that we could be true and living witnesses for Christ. Unfortunately, today's church has admired the gift but neglected to open it.

Page 5: Weekly news from WCUMC June 8 2014

Join us in Room 11 at 9 am on Sundays, June 22- August 5, as we study “Forgotten God.” Thorough scriptural support and compelling narrative, author Francis Chan invites us to stop and remember the One we've forgotten, the Spirit of the living God. Books ($12.50) are available from Don Morgan. Please email to order at [email protected]

Outdoor Adventures

Dungeness Spit Kayaking-

Hiking-Camping Trip

Page 6: Weekly news from WCUMC June 8 2014

Friday - Sunday, June 13-15

We camp at Dungeness Recreation area near Sequim, on Friday and Saturday nights (we have camping equipment for newbies). On Saturday, half our group kayaks to the lighthouse at the end of the spit while the other half hikes out (about 5 miles). Then we switch off and the other half kayaks back while the kayakers hike back - a full body workout in a beautiful location.

On Sunday, we break camp and have an outdoor worship service. Afterward, for those interested, they can go see the animals at the Olympic Game Farm. Warning: This is no zoo. You get up close and personal with buffaloes and other impressive animals (like grizzly bears). Then it's back home on the ferry.

Cost: $20 per person for camping, $2 per family to go out on the Spit, plus ferry fee, plus Olympic Game Farm Charges ($12 per adult, kids under 5 are free).

NOTE: This is Father's Day weekend so keep that in mind.

You can skip the kayaking and hike both ways or just part way. It's a beautiful location no matter how far you go.

This is a popular trip so sign up soon. $10 deposit to reserve your spot. You may write a check to the church and note on the check "OA Dungeness Spit Trip". For more information, contact Bob Clemence (360-668-9002) or David Snook (425-420-6641)
