Sharing the transforming love of Jesus, across the street and around the world.

Parables of Jesus Series

"The Rich Man and Lazarus”

Luke 16:19-31

While Pastor Rick is on a sabbatical, each Sunday we will have a message on selected parables. This week, Lee Palo shared a message on "The Parable of the Rich Man and Lazarus" - the characters, the meaning, and his recommendations on how to understand and apply the message in this parable.

“There was a rich man who was dressed in purple and fine linen and lived in luxury every day. At his gate was laid a beggar named Lazarus, covered with sores and longing to eat what fell from the rich man’s table. Even the dogs came and licked his sores. “The time came when the beggar died and the angels carried him to Abraham’s side. The rich man also died and was buried. In Hades, where he was in torment, he looked up and saw Abraham far away, with Lazarus by his side. So he called to him, ‘Father Abraham, have pity on me and send Lazarus to dip the tip of his finger in water and cool my tongue, because I am in agony in this fire.’ “But Abraham replied, ‘Son, remember that in your lifetime you

received your good things, while Lazarus received bad things, but now he is comforted here and you are in agony. 26 And besides all this, between us and you a great chasm has been set in place, so that those who want to go from here to you cannot, nor can anyone cross over from there to us.’ “He answered, ‘Then I beg you, father, send Lazarus to my family, for I have five brothers. Let him warn them, so that they will not also come to this place of torment.’ “Abraham replied, ‘They have Moses and the Prophets; let them listen to them.’ “‘No, father Abraham,’ he said, ‘but if someone from the dead goes to them, they will repent.’ “He said to him, ‘If they do not listen to Moses and the Prophets, they will not be convinced even if someone rises from the dead.’”

The Pharisees considered wealth to be a proof of a person's righteousness. Jesus startled and challenged them with this story where a diseased beggar is rewarded and a rich man is punished. The rich man did not go to hell because of his wealth, but because he was selfish, refusing to feed Lazarus, take him in, or care for him. The rich man was hardhearted in spite of his great blessings.

When the rich man realized the error of his ways, it was too late, so he asked Abraham to send word to his brothers so they would not suffer the same fate. But Abraham said if they did not believe Moses and the prophets, who spoke constantly of the duty to care for the poor, not even a resurrection would save them. Once again, Jesus used a story to reinforce his basic message of the power and reward when we "love one another".

Would you consider making an impact in the life of a student?

We are looking for help with the youth ministry to pour the love of Jesus Christ into the lives of students aged 10-16. The latest Barna Study indicates that nearly half (43%) of all Americans who accept Jesus Christ as their Savior do so before the age of 13. Almost two out of three (64%) of born-again Christians made that commitment to Christ before their 18th birthday.

You can help in many ways:

Chaperone retreats

Mentor student leaders

Lead weekly Crossfire events - play games, eat together, share the Gospel

Pray for our students

Teach "tweeners' Sunday School once a month
