“God’s Spirit-Filled People” A Sermon Series on Acts

“God’s Power… through God’s People”

Acts 5:12-42

Where there are faithful followers of Jesus, miraculous signs and wonders happen!! Acts 5:12-16 The apostles performed many signs and wonders among the people… they would even bring the sick out into the main streets and lay them on cots and mats so that at least Peter's shadow could fall on some of them as he passed by. Even large numbers of persons from towns around Jerusalem would gather, bringing the sick and those harassed by unclean spirits. Everyone was healed. Where God’s people perform signs and wonders, there will be persecution!! Acts 5:17-18 The high priest, together with his allies, the Sadducees, was overcome with jealousy. They seized the apostles and made a public show of putting them in prison. God will always provide the way, means, and power to His faithful followers. Acts 5:19-21

An angel from the Lord opened the prison doors during the night and led them out. The angel told them, "Go, take your place in the temple, and tell the people everything about this new life." Early in the

morning, they went into the temple as they had been told and began to teach. Spirit-filled people put obedience to God as their #1 priority. Acts 5:29-32

Peter and the apostles replied, "We must obey God rather than humans! The God of our ancestors raised Jesus from the dead--whom you killed by hanging him on a tree. God has exalted Jesus to his right side as leader and savior so that he could enable Israel to change its heart and life and to find forgiveness for sins. We are witnesses of such things, as is the Holy Spirit, whom God has given to those who obey him." The world will always hate those who obey God Acts 5:33

When the council members heard this, they became furious and wanted to kill the apostles. Human power is limited… God’s power is unstoppable Acts 5:38-40

Distance yourselves from these men. Let them go! If their plan or activity is of human origin, it will end in ruin. If it originates with God, you won't be able to stop them. Instead, you would actually find yourselves fighting God!" The council was convinced by his reasoning. After calling the apostles back, they had them beaten. They ordered them not to speak in the name of Jesus, then let them go. Stepping out in faith brings a life of power and joy … even in the midst of persecution Acts 5:41-42

The apostles left the council rejoicing because they had been regarded as worthy to suffer disgrace for the sake of the name. Every day they continued to teach and proclaim the good news that Jesus is the Christ, both in the temple and in houses. For Personal or Group Reflection 1. How do you account for the jealousy of the Sadducees in v. 17? 2. Reflecting on vs. 18-21, think of times when you experienced the power and provision of God while facing challenging times. 3. How do you think Peter’s response in vs. 29-32 aroused the fury of the Sadducees? How do you think that may have influenced Gamaliel? (vs. 38-40) 4. Why do you think the apostles considered it worth rejoicing when they suffered in the name of Jesus? 5. How would you feel if you went to prison because of your beliefs? 6. How has God set you free to honor Him more fully? 7. Why does God sometimes deliver you out of difficulties, and other

times allows you to face them? 8. Describe a time when you had to choose between God and humans?
