“By Faith… or Fear?”

Noah’s Story… Our Story

A Sermon Series based on Genesis 6-9

"By Faith… God’s Covenant Promise is Realized”

Genesis 9

We can be confident in God’s promises

Genesis 9:1-17

God blessed Noah and his sons and said to them, “Be fertile, multiply, and fill the earth. All of the animals on the earth will fear you and dread you—all the birds in the skies, everything crawling on the ground, and all of the sea’s fish. They are in your power. Everything that lives and moves will be your food. Just as I gave you the green grasses, I now give you everything. However, you must not eat meat with its life, its

blood, in it. I will surely demand your blood for a human life, from

every living thing I will demand it. From humans, from a man for his

brother,I will demand something for a human life. Whoever sheds

human blood,by a human his blood will be shed;for in the divine

imageGod made human beings.

As for you, be fertile and multiply. Populate the earth and multiply in it.” God said to Noah and to his sons with him, “I am now setting up my covenant with you, with your descendants, and with every living being with you—with the birds, with the large animals, and with all the animals of the earth, leaving the ark with you. I will set up my covenant with you so that never again will all life be cut off by flood waters. There will never again be a flood to destroy the earth.”

God said, “This is the symbol of the covenant that I am drawing up between me and you and every living thing with you, on behalf of every future generation. I have placed my bow in the clouds; it will be the

symbol of the covenant between me and the earth. When I bring clouds over the earth and the bow appears in the clouds, I will remember the covenant between me and you and every living being among all the creatures. Flood waters will never again destroy all creatures. The bow will be in the clouds, and upon seeing it I will remember the enduring covenant between God and every living being of all the earth’s creatures.” God said to Noah, “This is the symbol of the covenant that I have set up between me and all creatures on earth.”

God blesses faithfulness!!

God blessed Noah and his sons …

God gave Noah authority over all the creation…

All of the animals on the earth will fear you and dread you—all the birds in the skies, everything crawling on the ground, and all of the sea’s fish. They are in your power.

God commanded Noah to be fertile and multiply, to re-populate the earth with God’s redeemed people As for you, be fertile and multiply. Populate the earth and multiply in it.”

God made a covenant promise…

I will set up my covenant with you so that never again will all life be cut off by flood waters. There will never again be a flood to destroy the earth.”

God established the importance of a covenant symbol…

I have placed my bow in the clouds; it will be the symbol of the covenant between me and the earth.

For Personal or Group Reflection

1. What aspects of this covenant in Genesis 9:1-17 are forever?

2. What does this covenant stipulate from the human point of view?

3. What is the sign of this new covenant? Reflect on the possible reasons for that sign?

4. From elsewhere in scripture, what do you know about other signs of covenant commitments between God and His people?

5. What symbolic rainbow have you experienced in your own life recently? ... or in the past?

7. In what area of your life does this passage bring you comfort? Where does it challenge you?

Outdoor Adventures

Dungeness Spit Kayaking-

Hiking-Camping Trip

Friday - Sunday, June 13-15

Page 5: Weekly news from wcumc 5 25-14

We camp at Dungeness Recreation area near Sequim, on Friday and Saturday nights (we have camping equipment for newbies). On Saturday, half our group kayaks to the lighthouse at the end of the spit while the other half hikes out (about 5 miles). Then we switch off and the other half kayaks back while the kayakers hike back - a full body workout in a beautiful location.

On Sunday, we break camp and have an outdoor worship service. Afterward, for those interested, they can go see the animals at the Olympic Game Farm. Warning: This is no zoo. You get up close and personal with buffaloes and other impressive animals (like grizzly bears). Then it's back home on the ferry.

Cost: $20 per person for camping, $2 per family to go out on the Spit, plus ferry fee, plus Olympic Game Farm Charges ($12 per adult, kids under 5 are free).

NOTE: This is Father's Day weekend so keep that in mind.

You can skip the kayaking and hike both ways or just part way. It's a beautiful location no matter how far you go.

This is a popular trip so sign up soon. $10 deposit to reserve your spot. You may write a check to the church and note on the check "OA Dungeness Spit Trip". For more information, contact Bob Clemence (360-668-9002) or David Snook (425-420-6641)

Imagine No Malaria

Page 8: Weekly news from wcumc 5 25-14

The United Methodist Church is challenging each of us to save at least one life for each member of our families before the Annual Conference, June 19-22.

How many lives could you save? It will take many gifts, both large and small, to meet our goal.

Here’s how you can donate: • Send a text message to 27722 and a $10 donation will be added to your phone bill. The words in your text message help your donation be credited to your conference: MALARIA PNW for Pacific Northwest. • Donate online at imaginenomalaria.org. Make sure to select your local church so that your congregation will get credit! • Make checks payable to Imagine No Malaria with your church’s name in the memo line, and mail them to: UMC-- Imagine No Malaria P.O. Box 440544 Nashville, TN 37244- 0544 • Give to your local church, and treasurers can send directly to the address above.

When you donate to Imagine No Malaria, 100% of your donation reaches the people who need it most. That’s because the campaign’s

administrative expenses are covered by a grant from the Gates Foundation.
