“Facing Temptation” Matthew 4:1-11

Jesus faced 3 Temptations in the Wilderness in Matthew 4:1-11 Matthew 4:1-4 – (Temptation #1) Then the Spirit led Jesus up into the wilderness so that the devil might tempt him. After Jesus had fasted for forty days and forty nights, he was starving. The tempter came to him and said, "Since you are God's Son, command these stones to become bread." Jesus replied, "It's written, People won't live only by bread, but by every word spoken by God." (Deuteronomy 8:3) - “…people don't live on bread alone. No, they live based on whatever the Lord says.” Like Jesus, we are to put our total trust in God’s Word. Matthew 4:5-7 – (Temptation #2)

After that the devil brought him into the holy city and stood him at the highest point of the temple. He said to him, " Since you are God's Son, throw yourself down; for it is written, I will command my angels concerning you, and they will take you up in their hands so that you won't hit your foot on a stone." Jesus replied, "Again it's written, Don't test the Lord your God." (Deuteronomy 6:16) … “Don't test the Lord your God …” Like Jesus, we are to avoid putting God to the test. Matthew 4:8-10 - (Temptation #3)

Then the devil brought him to a very high mountain and showed him all the kingdoms of the world and their glory. He said, "I'll give you all these if you bow down and worship me." Jesus responded, "Go away, Satan, because it's written, You will worship the Lord your God and serve only him." Like Jesus, we are to worship and serve God alone. (Deuteronomy 6:13) “Revere the Lord your God, serve him…” (Exodus 20:3 and Deuteronomy 5:7) “You must have no other gods before me.” Jesus’ victory over temptation gives us every hope that we, too, can resist temptation because of the power of God’s Word in our lives. __________________________________________________________ Questions for Personal or Group Reflection 1. Reflect on the purpose of Jesus fasting for 40 days in the wilderness at the beginning of His ministry? 2. How have you fasted? How has it helped prepare you for facing temptation? 3. Looking at the three temptations in Matthew 4:1-11, what was the nature of each? What potentially may have appealed to Jesus? What would have been the consequences of Him yielding to those temptations? 4. How did Jesus overcome the temptations that Satan presented to Him? 5. In what areas are you most likely to be tempted? 6. What have you found helpful in overcoming temptation? 7. What is your greatest temptation right now? 8. How can others help?
