2014 Advent Sermon Series

“God’s Dangerous Mission”

John 3:16-19, 36

John 3:16-19, 36 God so loved the world that he gave his only Son, so that everyone who believes in him won’t perish but will have eternal life. God didn’t send his Son into the world to judge the world, but that the world might be saved through him. Whoever believes in him isn’t judged; whoever doesn’t believe in him is already judged, because they don’t believe in the name of God’s only Son.

“This is the basis for judgment: The light came into the world, and people loved darkness more than the light, for their actions are evil… …36 Whoever believes in the Son has eternal life. Whoever doesn’t believe in the Son won’t see life, but the angry judgment of God remains on them.” Have you ever thought about the “Dangerous Nature” of God? “He gave his only Son” Oftentimes God calls His people into roles they had never imagined, challenges they resisted, and dangerous territories they had not anticipated.

Abraham was called to leave his country, people, and his father’s household… (Genesis 12)

Moses was called to bring the Israelites out of Egypt… and responded “Who am I?” (Exodus 3:10-11)

Jonah was called to go to Nineveh, but resisted doing so (Jonah 1)

Recall the times you’ve been “called by God”. How have you responded? Jesus found Himself in the midst of God’s perfect will with a dangerous mission to accomplish.

Christ continues to make advances for the Kingdom and to call us into battle with Him. We just need to remember that the victory has already been won!

God calls us into unknown territory and into challenging situations… near and far. But He equips us through the Holy Spirit to be witnesses to the ends of the earth. (Acts 1)

Walking with Jesus is always “dangerous” because He has big things in mind for us… things that are more than we ever dreamed of or expected.

For Personal or Group Reflection 1. The birth of Jesus shook the world and the celestial realms. How does reflecting on Jesus’ “dangerous” mission impact your view of Christmas – the celebration of His birth? 2. What is your response to the “danger” of the gospel? 3. Reflect and meditate on the following scriptures this week: - Matthew 10:34-36 - Ephesians 6:10-12 - John 17:14-19 Next week’s message - “God is Jealous”, Luke 10:27 Pastor Rick Vinther preaching
