Why we do Simran

• There are two parts to our lives (day and night)

• Why we keep a lehka, so we know where we spend our thoughts and can calculate a profit.

• Achieve liberation/ break the cycle of life and death- by first learning to stop our thoughts on demand we learn to remove the mind from Maya.

ਇਹੁ ਮਨੁ ਭੂਲਾ ਜਾਂਦਾ ਫੇਰੇ ॥

This mind is deluded, and goes

around the wheel of

reincarnation.

Cycle of Life and Death

• Junes- the types of births that can be

taken

–Categorized by Gurmat not science

–They are 8.4 million

–Four ways which these Junes form

ਲਖ ਚਉਰਾਸੀਹ ਮਰਰ ਮਰਰ ਜਨਮੇ ਰਫਰਰ ਰਫਰਰ ਜੋਨੀ ਜੋਇਆ ॥੨॥

The 8.4 millions species of beings

die, and die again, and are born over and over again. They are consigned to

reincarnation. ||2||998

ਅੰਡਜ ਜੇਰਜ ਸੇਤਜ ਉਤਭੁਜ ਸਰਭ ਵਰਨ ਰੂਪ ਜੀਅ ਜੰਤ ਉਪਈਆ ॥

Life is born from the egg, from the womb, from

self generation and the earth;

God created the beings and creatures of all colors and forms. 835

Why are we in the Cycle

• It is a game of Dhyan

• Dhyan is an absorbed focus- a state where is there no difference between us and the object of our Dhyan

• We are always absorbed in our thoughts Huts, Guns, Sagars, Loks

• Our Dhyan is always in Maya both in physical attributes and thoughts because we love it.

• Always in Sargun

ਬਹੁ ਰਬਰਿ ਮਾਇਆ ਮੋਹ ਰਹਰਾਨੋ ॥ In so many ways,

attachment to Maya leads to ruin. 1269

ਰਮਿਗ ਪੰਖੀ ਮੀਨ ਦੀਨ ਨੀਚ ਇਹ ਸੰਕਟ ਰਫਰਰ ਆਨੋ ॥ He

wanders through troubled incarnations

of low and wretched species as a deer, a

bird and a fish. 1269

Rago gun Boom Lok

Tamo gun Patal Lok

Sato Gun Akash Lok

• The June we take is determined by which Hut in Maya we put the most swas or where we kept our last breath.

• Rago gun thoughts send us to Boom Lok- earth

• Sato gun Akash Lok in the sky

• Tamo gun is Patal Lok deep below the ground.

ਅੰਰਤ ਕਾਰਲ ਜੋ ਲਛਮੀ ਰਸਮਰੈ ਐਸੀ ਰਚੰਤਾ ਮਰਹ ਜੇ ਮਰੈ ਸਰਪ ਜੋਰਨ ਵਰਲ ਵਰਲ ਅਉਤਰੈ ॥ At the very last moment, one who thinks of wealth, and dies in

such thoughts, shall be reincarnated over and over again, in the form

of snake.

ਅੰਰਤ ਕਾਰਲ ਜੋ ਇਸਤਿੀ ਰਸਮਰੈ ਐਸੀ ਰਚੰਤਾ ਮਰਹ ਜੇ ਮਰੈ ॥ਬੇਸਵਾ ਜੋਰਨ ਵਰਲ ਵਰਲ ਅਉਤਰੈ ॥੨॥

At the very last moment, he who thinks of women, and

dies in such thoughts, shall be reincarnated over and over

again as a prostitute. ||2||

ਅੰਰਤ ਕਾਰਲ ਜੋ ਲਰਿਕੇ ਰਸਮਰੈ ਐਸੀ ਰਚੰਤਾ ਮਰਹ ਜੇ ਮਰੈ ॥ਸੂਕਰ ਜੋਰਨ ਵਰਲ ਵਰਲ ਅਉਤਰੈ ॥੩॥

At the very last moment, one who thinks of his children, and dies in such thoughts, shall

be reincarnated over and over again as a pig.

ਅੰਰਤ ਕਾਰਲ ਜੋ ਮੰਦਰ ਰਸਮਰੈ ਐਸੀ ਰਚੰਤਾ ਮਰਹ ਜੇ ਮਰੈ ॥ ਪਿੇਤ ਜੋਰਨ ਵਰਲ ਵਰਲ ਅਉਤਰੈ ॥੪॥ At the very last moment, one who thinks of their

home, and dies in such thoughts, shall be

reincarnated over and over again as a ghost.

||4||

ਅੰਰਤ ਕਾਰਲ ਨਾਰਾਇਣੁ ਰਸਮਰੈ ਐਸੀ ਰਚੰਤਾ ਮਰਹ ਜੇ ਮਰੈ॥ ਬਦਰਤ ਰਤਲੋਚਨੁ ਤੇ ਨਰ ਮੁਕਤਾ ਪੀਤੰਬਰੁ ਵਾ ਕੇ ਰਰਦੈ ਬਸੈ ॥੫॥੨॥

At the very last moment, one

who thinks of the Lord,

and dies in such thoughts, says

Trilochan, that man shall be

liberated; the Lord shall abide

in his heart. ||5||2||

Dhyan should be out of Maya

• Nirgun/ Formless form is outside Maya

and the cycle. Parlok

• If we put our Dhyan on Nirgun we will

learn to break the cycle of life and death.

• The sound we make is Nirgun- no shape,

no color, no form.

ਜਾ ਕੈ ਮਰਨ ਬਰਸਆ ਰਨਰੰਕਾਰੁ ॥ ਬੰਿਨ ਤੋਰਰ ਭਏ ਰਨਰਵੈਰ ॥ ਅਨਰਦਨੁ ਪੂਜਰਹ ਗੁਰ ਕੇ ਪੈਰ ॥ ਇਹ ਲੋਕ ਸੁਖੀਏ ਪਰਲੋਕ ਸੁਹੇਲੇ ॥

Within his mind, the Formless Lord

abides. His bonds are cut away,

and he becomes free of hatred. Night and day, he worships the Feet of the Guru. He is at peace

in this Lok, and happy in ParLok. 292

Dhune may Dhane

ਗੁਰਰ ਮੰਤੁ ਅਵਖਿੁ ਨਾਮੁ ਦੀਨਾ ਜਨ ਨਾਨਕ ਸੰਕਟ ਜੋਰਨ ਨ ਪਾਇ ॥੫॥੨॥ One who is blessed with the medicine of the

GurMantra, the Name of the

Lord, O servant Nanak, does not suffer the agonies of

reincarnation. ||5||2||1002

In the remembrance of

the Lord, He Himself is

Formless.263

Homework • Do minimum of 3 hours of simran of day

• Buy or make a notebook that you can carry

around with you all day.

• Write the percentages of your thoughts every

hour. With Rago and Tamo try to categorize

thoughts with your new knowledge. See below.
