“Faithful presence names the realitythat God is present in the world

and that (God) uses a peoplefaithful to (God’s) presence to make

(God) concrete and real amidthe world’s struggles and pain…(But) it doesn’t just happen.

We need practices that shape us to bea community of faithful presence.”

Tangible exercises we engage in,not to earn the grace of God,

but to put ourselves in the positionto receive and experience the grace of God

as the Spirit works through themto form the character of Jesus in us,

both individually AND as a church family

1 CORINTHIANS 11:23-26For I received from the Lord what I also handed on to you,

that the Lord Jesus on the night when he was betrayed took a loaf of bread, and when he had given thanks, he broke it and said, “This is my body that is for you.

Do this in remembrance of me.” In the same way he took the cup also, after supper, saying, “This cup is the new covenant in my blood.

Do this, as often as you drink it, in remembrance of me.” For as often as you eat this bread and drink the cup,

you proclaim the Lord’s death until he comes.

he took bread, blessed and broke it, and gave it to them. Then their eyes were opened,

and they recognized him…

“The Church doesn’t have a social strategy;the Church is a social strategy…The most creative

social strategy we have to offer is the Church. Here we show the world a manner of life

the world can never achieve through social coercion or governmental action.

We serve the world by showing it something that it is not, namely, a place where

God is forming a family out of strangers.”

“…as each person submits to (Jesus),the issues of relationships with one another

and to Christ – to authority and how werelate to each other – are opened up.

The socioeconomic relationships among usare realigned as we share mutually

out of what we have and what we receive. In this space we submit all of our divisionsand personal agendas to Christ’s presence.”

“And an amazing social dynamic breaks forththat can only be described as a new political

order subverting all other allegiances.Just as the first tables of the early Christians

subverted Rome and Caesar and starteda new way of life before the watching world,

so this table subverts all other politics of American self-preservation,

accumulation and individualism.”

BENEDICTION (Mark 12)One of the scribes…asked him,

“Which commandment is the first of all?” Jesus answered, “The first is:

‘Hear, O Israel: the Lord our God, the Lord is one; you shall love the Lord your God

with all your heart, and with all your soul, and with all your mind, and with all your strength.’

The second is this: ‘You shall love your neighbor as yourself.’

There is no other commandment greater than these.”
