This time it is by their close relatives, the Midianites. Isaac
& Midian were both sons of Abraham. These two nations
have a long history. Joseph was sold to Midianites and taken to
Egypt as a slave. Moses was married to a Midianite

They were joined with Moab in desiring Balaam to curse Israel,
and then in tempting Israel to whoredom and idolatry with
Baal Peor. (Fausset) The influence of the Midianites,
on the Israelites, was clearly most evil, and directly tended to lead them, from the injunctions

Judges 6:1 NET The Israelites did evil in the LORD's sight, so the

3 Whenever the Israelites planted their crops, the Midianites,
Amalekites, and the people from the east would attack them. 4 They invaded the land and devoured its
crops all the way to Gaza. They left nothing for the Israelites to eat, and
they took away the sheep, oxen, and donkeys.

The chosen people of God are really hurting! STARVING! The Midianite people are
everywhere, as thick as locusts and like locust, devouring
everything edible in their path. There were 135,000 fighting men according to Judges 8:10.

It seems the reason the Israelites find themselves in this predicament is, as usual, they have worshiped
the false gods of the area they happen to be in.
11 The LORD's angelic messenger came and sat down under the oak tree in Ophrah owned by Joash the

15 Gideon said to him, "But Lord, how can I deliver Israel? Just look!

GOD’S ARMY
The Midianites would have to be conquered. The Israelites would have to destroy them, but how? We read the Midianites were as
thick as locusts. An army of 135,000. But they weren’t the
real danger.The really dangerous enemies
were within the hearts of Gideon’s soldiers.

Fear was one of them, and it sent 22,000 men home.
Judges 7:1 NET Jerub-Baal (that is, Gideon) and his men got up the next morning and camped near
the spring of Harod. The Midianites were camped north

2 The LORD said to Gideon, "You have too many men for me to hand
Midian over to you. Israel might brag, 'Our own strength has

fear may turn around and leave Mount Gilead.' " Twenty-two
thousand men went home; ten thousand remained.

Overconfidence was another enemy
Judges 7:4 NET The LORD spoke to Gideon again, "There are still too many men. Bring them down to
the water and I will thin the ranks some more. When I say, 'This one should go with you,' pick
him to go; when I say, 'This one should not go with you,' do not
take him."

5 So he brought the men down to the water. Then the LORD said to Gideon, "Separate those who lap the water as a dog laps from
those who kneel to drink." 6 Three hundred men lapped; the
rest of the men kneeled to drink water.

uses to glorify His name. When God is on your side, the size of
the enemy is of no great concern, so keep your eyes on
Him.

When God strips away your resources, it is not to impoverish your life,
but to enrich your faith. Thus assured of victory, Gideon
returned to the camp of Israel and summoned his men to war.
Let’s look at the trumpets.

impression that a great host was coming down upon them.

The divine interpretation of this incident is given in:
2 Corinthians 4:5 NET For we do not proclaim ourselves, but Jesus
Christ as Lord, and ourselves as your slaves for Jesus’ sake. 6 For God, who said "Let light shine out
of darkness," is the one who shined in our hearts to give us the light of the glorious knowledge of
God in the face of Christ.

carried torches in order to light up the battlefield.

The day of the Lord is an “about to happen” reality.
It is not something that we are slowly moving toward, it is always ready to burst in on us. At any moment,
the day that is “near” will become PRESENT!

and they perish, God will require their blood at the watchman’s
hand.

God held Ezekiel responsible for the house of Israel. The question arises for every
believer: For whom will God hold us responsible?
To whom shall we witness? Whom shall we warn?
Our relatives, co-workers, neighbors, friends?

It is a solemn responsibility, and we do harm to our own soul if we do
not fulfill it faithfully. The prophet’s ministry is likened unto that of a watchman, or sentry, observing the danger of a coming
enemy and then warning his people. In like manner, he is a watchman to them in spiritual
matters.

A watchman’s failure was punishable by death.
In the case of Ezekiel, punishment would come directly from God if he failed to report to the people the messages God
gave him.
