Third Commandment:
REMEMBER TO KEEP
HOLY THE SABBATH DAY
(Exodus 20:8)
The Sabbath is for the Lord and is set apart for the praise of God
Jesus explained that the Sabbath is made for man and not man for the Sabbath.
Adam and Eve, right after the 6th day, were commanded by God to take rest.
Our first day of the week is also Sunday which is for resting.
SABBATH IS A DAY OF RESTING and
NOT TO BE EQUATED with
Saturday.Like Jesus, before starting His ministry, He retreated
in the desert for forty days to pray and fast.
WHY THERE’S A SABBATH
DAY?
1) JESUS ROSE FROM THE DEAD ON THE 1ST DAY OF THE WEEK, WHICH IS
SUNDAY.
2) THE EUCHARIST IS CELEBRATED WAY BACK IN THE EARLY CHURCH ON SUNDAY
“On the first day of the week when we grouped together and break bread”
(Acts 20:7)
3) ST. PAUL ADMONISHED THE JEWS TO LEAVE THE JEWISH
PRACTICE BEHIND
“You are observing days, months, seasons and years. I’m afraid on your
account that I labored in vain”(Gal. 4:10)
4) THE LORD GAVE THE SABBATH TO THE PEOPLE IN THE DESERT AFTER
THEIR EXODUS FROM EGYPT IMMEDIATELY AFTER CREATION’S
WORK
5) WHEN MOSES GAVE THE SABBATH COMMANDMENT, THERE WAS NO
CALENDAR SYSTEM – ONLY A CYCLE OF SIX DAYS WORK AND ONE DAY
REST.
WORKS PERMITTED ON SUNDAY AND HOLIDAYS OF
OBLIGATION ARE:
• SERVILE WORK (works of mercy)• LIGHT AND TRIFLING WORK• OCCUPATIONS OF INTELECTUAL
NATURE• REASONABLE RECREATION• ATTEND AND ASSIST ON PUBLIC
MASS
SIN AGAINST THE THIRD
COMMANDMENT:
1) Requiring others to perform servile work. The Christian allow his servants and cattles to
rest on Sunday. (Exodus 10:10)
2) By carelessness about attendance in
public worship. “What folly, remarks St. Francis of Sales,
to turn day into night and night into
day, and neglect one’s duties for
frivolous amusement”
3) Indulging in diversions which are
over fatiguing or which are sinful
nature. St. Augustine opined “It is better that one is
occupied with needle of filed-work
on Sunday than indulge in vice”
