The Capital Campaign Planning Study
Stewardship AdvocatesTM
Jesus Teaches about Planning!
For which of you, desiring to build a tower, does not first sit down and count the cost, whether he has enough to complete it? Otherwise, when he has laid a foundation, and is not able to finish it, all who see it begin to mock him saying, “This man began to build, and was not able to finish.”
(Luke 14:28‐30)
The Purpose of a Campaign Planning Study
The Planning Study in a capital campaign is analogous to the subsurface borings that must be completed before constructing a building. It is a separate contracted service usually apart from the actual fundraising contracted service.
Campaign Planning Study Overview1. Consultant provides documents to client concerning the study;2. Parish recruits campaign planning steering committee (this is not
yet the fundraising team);3. Client writes the “Statement of Need” (consultant provides
samples);4. Client identifies those to be personally interviewed; all others
complete same questions online or in a paper survey;5. Client mails statement of need and gift chart to prospective
interviewees and general parish;6. Client calls to secure telephone appointments with interviewees;
works to get high level of response from others;7. Consultant comes to parish and completes interviews; web‐based
and mailed surveys sent to all others;8. Consultant returns to parish to submit 40‐50 page written report
and present the summary of the findings in a PowerPoint.
The Planning Study Interview
• Confidential• Spouses encouraged to participate• 25‐35 minutes in length• 30 or so questions (same as on mailed and Internet survey)• Interviews on Skype or phone for those unable to come to
the church• Based on the “Statement of Need” and “Gift Chart”• No solicitation occurs though inquiry regarding their
possible participation is made
Benefits of the Campaign Planning Study• Assesses institutional capacity – adequate staffing and
technology• Determines campaign goals• Engages key parishioners in the project by having them read
the “Statement of Need”• Achieves significant cultivation opportunity in interviews• Builds consensus within community via web‐based or snail‐
mailed surveys offered to all those not personally interviewed• Analyzes present fundraising practices• Offers conclusions and recommendations on how to proceed• Provides information to formulate fund raising plan• Identifies prospective leadership and previously unknown
sources of giving
