Sign on a pastor’s desk:

It’s too late to agree with me; I’ve already

changed my mind.

14 The beginning of strife is as when one letteth out water: therefore leave off contention, before it be meddled with.

(NIV) 14 Starting a quarrel is like breaching a dam; so drop the matter before a dispute breaks out.

What danger there is in the beginning of strife! Resist its earliest display; and leave it off, if it were possible, before you begin.

Matthew Henry Concise Bible Commentary.

Many churches have been split because people were

determined to be right.

They just would not let it go.

If you want to destroy your marriage, be determined to be

right.

15 He that justifieth the wicked, and he that condemneth the just, even they both are abomination to the LORD.

Micah 6 8 He hath shewed thee, O man, what is good; and what doth the LORD require of thee, but to do justly, and to love mercy, and to walk humbly with thy God?

Psalm 89:14 (NIV) Righteousness and justice are the foundation of Your throne; love and faithfulness go before You.

16 Wherefore is there a price in the hand of a fool to get wisdom, seeing he hath no heart to it?

It is nonsensical for a fool to pay to learn,

When, in his heart, he is determined not to learn.

We pay for so many to go to school who are determined not to learn.

They do not learn, and they hinder those who have a desire to learn and do well.

17 A friend loveth at all times, and a brother is born for adversity.

(TLB) 17 A true friend is always loyal, and a brother is born to help in time of need.

This is especially true in the family of God.

Hebrews 2 11-12 For both He that sanctifieth and they who are sanctified are all of one: for which cause He is not ashamed to call them brethren,

Saying, I will declare Thy Name unto My brethren, in the midst of the church will I sing praise unto Thee.

Jesus Christ is our elder brother.

He loves us, and He is not ashamed of us.

18 A man void of understanding striketh hands, and becometh surety in the presence of his friend.

(TLB) 18 It is poor judgment to countersign another’s note, to become responsible for his debts.

The surest way to lose a friend is to co-sign for him to get a loan.

If he doesn’t pay then the co-signer owes the debt.

19 He loveth transgression that loveth strife: and he that exalteth his gate seeketh destruction.

A man who loves to fuss, cuss, and fight is a man who loves sin.

“Exalteth his gate” speaks of pride –

Either pride shown with high gates and tall doors –

Conspicuous consumption

Or pride shown by bragging.

Proverbs 16 18 Pride goeth before destruction, and an haughty spirit before a fall.

Pride in one’s own strength and agility often leads to strife and fights.

Pride in wealth leads to displays of conspicuous

consumption.
