When Jesus came, he often demonstrated compassion, an open heart, for those who were in need (whether physically or spiritually), and through the parables taught us that we must have this same open heart for one another. This is what John teaches us in our text, that we are to love one another, as Jesus loved. In this lesson we are challenged to love with open hearts.

“we should love one another”
We SHOULD NOT be like Cain, who was of the evil one and murdered his brother. And why did he murder him? Because his own deeds were evil and his brother's righteous. 1 John 3.12, CB NT p. 422

Greater love has no one than this, that someone lay down his life for his friends. (John 15:13, CB NT p. 194)
By this we know love, that He laid down His life for us
1 John 3.16, CB NT p. 422
but God shows his love for us in that while we were still sinners, Christ died for us.
(Romans 5:8, CB NT p. 270)
By this we know love, that He laid down His life for us
1 John 3.16, CB NT p. 422
For Christ also suffered once for sins, the righteous for the unrighteous, that he might bring us to God, being put to death in the flesh but made alive in the spirit, (1 Peter 3:18, CB NT p. 411)
By this we know love, that He laid down His life for us,and we OUGHT to lay down our lives for the brothers.
1 John 3.16, CB NT p. 422
But if anyone has the world's goods and sees his brother in need, yet closes his heart against him, how does God's love abide in him?

Luke 16.19-21, CB NT p. 140
and in Hades, being in torment, he lifted up his eyes and saw Abraham far off and Lazarus at his side.
And he called out, ‘Father Abraham, have mercy on me, and send Lazarus to dip the end of his finger in water and cool my tongue, for I am in anguish in this flame.’
Luke 16.23-24, CB NT p. 141
