“What is the glue that binds matter and spirit together?”

The “three forces or modes” – which arise from the power of mother nature are the ropes that bind the soul almost inexorably into a

material body.6

Mode = modus (latin) = manner, fashion, style

Mode = guna (sanskrit) = material quality/behavior

Modes ?

The modes are the measures of interaction between conscious spirit and

unconscious matter. 7

The three modes comprise subtle cosmological forces that are inter-twined into a 3 strand rope, where in, each of the strands are battling with one another for supremacy. These modes exert psychological influences on us, thereby impelling us toward certain

kinds of action.8

Material nature consists of three modes — goodness, passion and ignorance. When the eternal living entity comes in contact with nature, O mighty-armed Arjuna, he becomes conditioned by these modes.
