A Devotional Thought from the Pastor’s desk:

Sometimes You Simply Have to Take Him at His Word

We have all been shaken by the Boston Marathon Bombings. Terrorists succeed when terror takes

up residence in our minds. Events like these shake us deeper than we realize. Preoccupation with

terrifying events makes it hard to recover our “peace of mind”. Our faith tells us that we must find

someone we can trust. Without someone, whom we can completely trust, inner peace becomes

impossible. Then Jesus comes and says to us. “Let not your hearts be troubled; believe in God,

believe also in Me.” (John 14:1). We might ask ourselves, have I ever received what Jesus

promises for no other reason than it is Jesus who is speaking? He says, “My peace I give to you,

not as the world gives, give I unto you. Let not your hearts be troubled, neither let them be

afraid” (John 14:27). Can we turn our faces to Jesus and simply take Him at His word, stop being

afraid and trust completely in Him?

Oswald Chambers says, “with regard to troubles that are pressing in upon you right now, are you

looking unto Jesus (Hebrews 12:2) and receiving peace from Him? If so, He, Himself, will be a

gracious blessing of peace for you.” As the hymn says, “I need no other resting place. . . .” But if I

only try to worry my way out of the problem, I destroy His effectiveness in me. We become

troubled in spirit because we have not, as the old hymn suggests “. . . turned our eyes upon Jesus.”

We are too aware of our terrifying circumstances just as Peter became too aware of the wind and

the water when he tried to walk to Jesus across the sea. When a person confers with Jesus Christ,

the confusion stops, because there is no confusion in Him. Try it. Sounds too easy doesn’t it? But

have we given it a try?

Dr. William “Bill” Hardison, Jr.

Mission Moment

Thanks to those who donated money to purchase blank DVDs for Camp

Alkulana.

Volunteers are still needed for our May mission assignment which is to prepare

and serve breakfast to the homeless at Oregon Hill Baptist Center on May 16.

Let Tiffany know if you are interested.

Please continue to buy items for the food closet. Needed items include:

powdered milk (in single pouches), soups, canned meat, canned fruit, cereal,

oatmeal, peanut butter, jelly, mac & cheese, and spaghetti sauce.

As always, thank you for your continued support of our mission projects.

Your Help

is Still Needed . . .

The summer and early fall

consumption of soda is

great in many households,

so let’s continue to help

the Ronald McDonald

House by saving your pop-

top tabs. Drop your tabs in

the container in the main

hallway or you can give

them to Shep. This is a

great cause and your cur-

rent and past help is

greatly appreciated..

Thank you.

The Library Corner of Our Church

Sunday School Update

Rev. Duganne has expressed an interest in the award of the High Attendance

banner. To make it accurate, I will divide the members present by the total number

of members in each class each Sunday. To date, I have already made an error in

my calculations. On March 31st, the first Sunday the banner was awarded, Johnny

Butler’s Young Men’s Class should have received the banner with 100% present.

Congratulations to this new growing class!!!

The total in Sunday school for the month of March was an amazing 253. This is

the highest total I have recorded since starting in October, 2012. Keep in mind

there were five Sundays plus Easter which would account for the higher number of

attendees. But, this is an indication we are growing with the excellent lessons

provided by our teachers.

DINNER ON THE GROUNDS, sponsored by the Sunday school, will be held

May 19th with Book Club meeting immediately following. The book is one

everyone would enjoy. Please refer to the Library article in this Candle. Keep

praying that our “family/members” who previously left us will return for our

church’s annual “Dinner on the Grounds”. Possibly this is the occasion to welcome

them back into the fellowship. They are still in our hearts and on our minds.

Linda Eades, Sunday school Director

Our Library has received many newer donations and is always open for members

and friends to enjoy. Please come up and take advantage of newer magazines as

well as a book you could enjoy. As summer (hopefully) approaches and school is

in recess, more time will be available to read for pleasure rather than what’s

required. Our children/youth books have increased and are in the far corner of the

Library.

Proof of Heaven, A Neurosurgeon’s Journey into the Afterlife was written by

Eben Alexander M.D. This is the book we will review on May 19th right after

“Dinner on the Grounds”. This will be our third book involving trips to heaven

that the Book Club has discussed. If you have not stayed for the discussions we

enjoy, please take this opportunity to do so. We love to have new members with

which to fellowship.

As always, thanks to those who donate books and/or magazines. Ask Barbara

Richards or me to help you if you need a book or magazine and cannot find

something of interest.

As our Wednesday night programming draws to a close in May, I want to thank all those who

are responsible for making it “happen”:

Cherub Choir - Ashley Morgan and Kim Morris

Sonshine Singers - Monica White and Darryl Emerson

Sonshine Ringers - Carolyn Hardison and Mary Ann Johnson

Youth Choir - Bill Duganne, Susan Butler, Monica White, Bob Turner and Darryl Emerson

And of course it would not “happen” without our cook extraordinaire, Norma Gilbert and all

her helpers and dishwashers.

Mostly it would not “happen” without you. Thank you for your support!
