Sickness

What is our responsibility towards it when we arefaced with it

What does the Quran and Sunnah teach us about itLife in this world is full of surprises. It is verymysterious, it goes through periods of ups anddowns

But the test of a believer is to maintain a true levelof Imaan through these periods of fluctuations

What we learn from Quran and theSunnah

That every thing is from Allah swt, therefore during theseperiods one should say

"0 Allah this is from you and I accept it with grace andhumility ..."

• When he is down he should bear it with ~ orpatience and remember Allah swt thus doing .fi":J

• When things are going well then he should thank.P Allah swt and remember the bounty of hisLord thus doing .fi":J

Dua and al Qadr

• Some will say it is in my Qadr, written in myMother book therefore I do not have to dodua or ask Allah for help or thank him for thesuccess. This is not the attitude of a believer.

• Yesbelieving in al Qadr or Predestiny is part ofour belief or Imaan. It is one of the pillars ofImaan

• As the Sublime said in His book, He is notquestioned what He does-it is they who willbe questioned (21-23). Hence anyone who asks,"Why has He done this?" has rejected thejudgment of the book. And whoever rejectsthe judgment of the Book is among thedisbelievers.

• Do not say "Why mel" In other wordsdo not have "Why me Syndrome.1I

Allah says in the Quran

• "But give Glad tidings to thepatient--- those who, when afflictedwith calamity, say, 'Truly, to Allahwe belong and to Him is our finalreturn. It is those who will beawarded blessings and mercy, fromtheir Lord and it is those who arethe guided ones." al Baqara 155-157

Who are most afflicted???

• Prophet pbuh said• "Those who are most afflicted among the people

are the Prophets, then the best, then next thebest. One is afflicted in accordance with thestrength of his deen (religion). If his religion(deen) is firm, his affliction is hard, and if his deenis weak his affliction is light. Indeed, one wouldbe so much subjected to adversity until he walksamong people without any sin

Sickness is an alleviation of sin

• Abu Hureira narrated that the Prophet pbuh said

• "Affliction will continue to trouble thebelievers, men and women, in theirbodies, their families, and their lHQPerty(it acts as an expiation for them) untilthey meet Allah, the Mighty, theExalted, while there is no sin remainingon them."

In another Hadith he said

• "When Allah wills good for a servant of His, Heexpedites his punishment in this life, and whenHe wills retribution for a servant of His, Heholds his sins for him to judge by them on theDay of Resurrection."

• Abu Saeed al Khudri and Abu Hureira said thatthe Prophet pbuh said

• 'A Muslim does not meet with fatigue, ortiredness, or concern, or sorrow, or injury orgrief, not so much as a thorn prick but that Allahswt expiates his errors for him by that."

Multiplications of rewards

• . When an afflicted believer shows contentment, his rewards are multiplied and attains Allah'sacceptance as reported by Anas ra

• Abu Umama said, that the prophet said, Allahsays, "0 son of Adam, when I take both the twoprecious ones (eyes) from you and you arepatient when the (first) shock happened andreckon your reward with Allah, the only rewardwhich I am content for you to have is theGarden ...•."

In another hadith

• The Messenger of Allah said• liThe magnitude of the reward is in

accordance with the magnitude of theaffliction. When Allah swt loves some people,He afflicts them. He who is then content (withAllah's decree) will achieve the acceptance (QfAllah): and he who is dissatisfied (with Allah'sdecree) will attain the anger of Allah"

credit him with the reward the sameas he was doing while healthy."

Abdullah ibn Umar ra is known to havestated

• Objecting• About the sickness means objecting to what Allah has

decreed for you.• Remember many of Allah's chosen Prophets went through

some of the toughest tests. Ayub, Yunus and others, mayAllah be pleased with them. They never objected whensubjected to sicknesses and sufferings

Pray to Allah swt by saying• " I know it is from you my Lord and I know you will soon take me out of it.

a my Lord please preserve my Imaan in this time of trial." RememberAllah says in the Quran
