Stories of Origin & Important PeopleJewish Unifying Story (Abraham Story)In this story God says to Abraham that if he believes in one God (a.k.a Monotheism) he will make his name great and appoint him the father of a great nation. God also granted him a son named Isaac. Abraham and his wife Sarah grew old and God ordered them to sacrifice Isaac. Abraham was about to do this when God stopped him, telling him it was a test.

Core BeliefsOne GodJews believe in only one God. This is called monotheism.

613 MitzvotJews follow 613 mitzvot, or commandments. The most famous ones are called the 10 Commandments.

This represents Monotheism, the belief in only one God.

The Torah contains all of the 613 mitzvot. The Ten Commandments are included.

Holy WritingsThe TorahThe Torah is the holy book for Jews. It contains The Five Books Of Moses. Which has multiple names like the Old Testament, and the Hebrew Testament. There are a total of 613 commandments in The Torah.

The Ten CommandmentsThe Ten Commandments are regulations given by God to Moses. They are the most important commandments of all the 613 mitzvahs.

This is The Torah. Jews treat it like a queen. This is why it’s all dressedup.

The Ten Commandmentsare written Hebrew, and were given by God to Moses.

Objects And SymbolsThe MenorahThe Menorah, is an object used onHanukkah. It symbolizes when the Jews had enough oil to last 1 day but it ended up lasting 8 days.

The Eternal LightThe eternal light is a light in a synagogue that represents the presence of God. In Hebrew it is called Ner Tamid.

The Star Of DavidThe star of david is a star that is the symbol of Judaism. It comes from a king named David.

The Menorah has 8 candles for the 8 days that the oil lasted.

This is an example of aneternal light. Not all eternallights look the same.

Holy Places And Places Of WorshipSynagogueA place of worship for Jews. The synagogue has all the items and symbols mentioned in the previous slide. It can also be called a temple, or shul.

The Western WallThis wall was part of the original synagogue. When praying at a synagogue Jews pray toward The Western Wall.

This is a very fancy synagogue.

American synagogues are not usually this

fancy. This is the Western Wall.

It is located in Jerusalem.

Bar MitzvahA Bar or Bat Mitzvah is a

ceremony in which boys and girls are responsible for keeping the 613

mitzvot.

MarriageThere are two items during marriage*Chupah*Ketubah

DeathIn a death a couple things

happen*Quick Burial

*Shiva

A boy having a bar mitzvah.

This is a Ketubah, two witnesses must sign it. It is

a wedding contract.

Rosh HashanahRosh Hashanah is the Jewish new

year.

The shofar is also blown on Rosh-Hashanah.

A man at a synagogue on Yom Kippur.

Yom KippurThis is a day of

atonement. The shofar is blown on it.
