Introduction:

• In John 8:1-12 Jesus reveals himself as

the eternal Son of God.

• The I AM statements help us understand

Him.

• What does this “I AM” statement mean?

• How does it relate to you and I?

Light Brings the Knowledge

of Our Need! • “Then” v.12 refers to the previous experience.

• The adulterous woman… all eyes were

focused on her.

• Pharisees try to catch Jesus between Law and

grace. Hosea 6:6; Matthew 9:13

– Jesus came to fulfill the Law. Mt. 5:17

– He was also the friend of sinners! Matthew 11:19;

John 15:13; Romans 5:8

– The Law demanded death for adultery. Lev. 20:10

• What would Jesus do?

Light Brings the Knowledge

of Our Need! John 8:1-12

• Jesus stooped and wrote on the ground. 6, 8

• No one now living knows what He wrote.

– ??Romans 3:10; Ecclesiastes 7:20??

– The law makes us all face our sins. Romans 7:7;

1 Corinthians 9:21; John 12:48

• Pharisees are now aware of their own sins…

– “He that is without sin among you, let him first

cast a stone at her” v.7; Romans 6:23

– Exposed to the Light they all departed. v.9

Light Brings Hope to the

Hopeless! John 8:10-11

• The woman was guilty without hope.

• Now she would have hope, forgiveness.

– “Where are those thine accusers?”

– “She said, No one Lord.”

– “Neither do I condemn thee” John 3:17-21

• Jesus is the eternal Son of God!

– Jesus corrects with a blanket statement,

“…Go and SIN NO MORE”.

– We have both hope and forgiveness through

Christ today! 1 Timothy 1:1; Ephesians 1:7

Light Brings Hope to the

Hopeless! V.10-12

• Light for all in the dark. Eph. 2:11-13

– The dayspring from on high. Luke 1:78

– A light for the Gentiles. Luke 2:32

– The Light was the life of men. John 1:4-7

• Our Lord’s passion for a lost world…

– World appears 79 times in John’s gospel.

– This is capsulized in John 3:16.

– The adulteress deserved death but received life.

• She deserved to be condemned but received

pardon. John 3:17; Luke 19:10

Light Brings Direction to

Those Who Are Delivered!

• Christ teaches us today, Go and sin no

more. John 8:11-12; Col. 3:1-6

• We shall not walk in darkness but have the

light of life. 1 Jn. 1:5, 7

• These are directions for those who have

been forgiven because they have obeyed

the gospel of Christ. Matthew 28:20

– Salvation is only the beginning, we’re not to

walk in darkness anymore. Eph. 2:8-10

– We’re to walk in newness of life. Rom. 6:4

Conclusion:

• We have seen that the sinless Savior brings

light and life to sinners.

• Come out of darkness to the Light of the

World – Jesus! Acts 26:18

• He will enable you to walk in His light by

obeying His gospel and being faithful.
