Great Creatures of the Sea. IVP

• Genesis 1:20 In the Babylonian Hymn to Shamash, the sun god is said to receive praise and reverence even from the worst groups. Included in the list are the fearsome monsters of the sea. The hymn thus suggests that there is a total submission of all creatures to Shamash, just as the Genesis creation texts shows all creatures created by, and therefore submitted to, Yahweh. The Labbu Myth records the creation of the sea viper, whose length was sixty leagues.

According to Their Kinds

• Gen 1:25….God made the wild animals according to their kinds, the livestock according to their kinds, and all the creatures that move along the ground according to their kinds.

• So how do we get from a phish to a philosopher?• Fish to frog, to salamander, to reptile to birds and

mammals.• Or as they say;• From goo to you, by way of the zoo.

Page 21: Genesis, ch 1, #4, 1;20 27, 8-26-12

First, Let’s Ask “When Was The Word “Dinosaur” Created?”

• Word Origin & Historydinosaur 1841, coined by Sir Richard Owen, from Gk. deinos "terrible" +sauros "lizard," of unknown origin. Fig. sense of "person or institution not adapting to change" is from 1952.

When Were The Dinosaurs Created?

• "Genesis 1:21 God created the great sea monsters [8577 tannin] and every living creature that moves, with which the waters swarmed …."

• "Genesis 1:25 God made the beasts [2421b, chayyah] of the earth after their kind, and the cattle [0929,

behemah] after their kind, and everything that creeps on the ground after its kind…."

• So the “great sea monsters” were day 5, the “beasts of the earth after their kind, and the cattle” were day 6

Page 23: Genesis, ch 1, #4, 1;20 27, 8-26-12

Tanniym = “dragon”

• Every KJV, OT use (6X’s) of the word translated as sea monsters in Genesis 1:21, the Strong’s Hebrew word #8577 (tannin/ tanniym), is translated as “dragon”

• The word “dinosaur” wasn’t invented yet.

Idolatry vs. Made in Image of God.

• “Genesis 1:26-27 Image of God. When God created people, he put them in charge of all of his creation. He endowed them with his own image. In the ancient world an image was believed to carry the essence of that which it represented. An idol image of deity, the same terminology as used here, would be used in the worship of that deity because it contained the deity’s essence. This would not suggest that the image could do what the deity could do, nor that it looked the same as the deity.

• IVP Bible Background Commentary: Old Testament

Page 28: Genesis, ch 1, #4, 1;20 27, 8-26-12

Idolatry vs. Made in Image of God.

• Rather, the deity’s work was thought to be accomplished through the idol. In similar ways the governing work of God was seen to be accomplished by people. But that is not all there is to the image of God. Gen 5:1-3 likens the image of God in Adam to the image of Adam in Seth. This goes beyond the comment about plants and animals reproducing after their own kind, though certainly children share physical characteristics and basic nature (genetically) with their parents.”

Made in Image of God.

Page 30: Genesis, ch 1, #4, 1;20 27, 8-26-12

Idolatry vs. Made in Image of God.

• “What draws the idol imagery and the child imagery together is the concept that the image provides the capacity not only to serve in the place of God (his representative containing his essence) but also to be and act like him. The tools he provided so that we may accomplish that task include conscience, self-awareness and spiritual discernment. Mesopotamian traditions speak of sons being in the image of

• their fathers (*Enuma Elish ) but do not speak of humans created in the image of God; but the Egyptian Instructions of Merikare identifies humankind as the god’s images who came from his body. In Mesopotamia a significance of the image can be seen in the practice of kings setting up images of themselves in places where they want to establish their authority. Other than that, it is only other gods who are made in the image of gods.”

Creation Accounts From Mesopotamia

• “creation of people in ancient Near Eastern myths. In creation accounts from Mesopotamia an entire population of people is created, already civilized, using a mixture of clay and the blood of a slain rebel god. This creation comes about as the result of conflict among the gods, and the god organizing the cosmos had to overcome the forces of chaos to bring order to his created world. The Genesis account portrays God’s creation not as part of a conflict with opposing forces but as a serene and controlled process.”

• from IVP Bible Background Commentary: Old Testament, Genesis 1:26-31.

Let Us Make, Genesis 1:26

• “Accordingly, in the narrative of this last act of the Creator's work, when completed, the word [chayaah] "living thing" is the general term employed, which comprehends the whole extent of the animal creation. The manner in which this narrative is introduced shows the peculiar importance of the work to be done-the formation of a creature who was to be God's representative, invested with authority and rule as visible head and monarch of the world. In the previous acts of His creative power

Let Us Make, Genesis 1:26

• God had put forth the mere fiat of His will, "Let there be light," "Let the earth bring forth," etc.; but on this last occasion He said, "Let us make man." This form of expression, which seems to indicate deliberation, as well as mutual consultation, is not to be explained either by the peculiarity of the idiom referred to on [Elohiym] Gen 1:1 - for "us" is joined here to a plural verb; or by the use of the pluralis majestatis, because this lofty style, in which earthly potentates commonly speak of themselves, was as yet unknown.”

pluralis majestatis or Plural of Majesty

• This Plural of Majesty did not exist during the time Scripture was written down. It was invented much later in human history, as a response to the plural elohim referring to the singular, one true God of John 17:3, and elsewhere. Whether kings embraced this to make themselves sound lofty, or more royal, I know not. However, there is not one use of the Plural of Majesty by any king, Jew or gentile, anywhere in Scripture.

Let Us Make, Genesis 1:26

• “Nor is the difficulty removed by supposing that God was addressing himself to the angelic hosts, because the hypothesis that they accompanied Him as counselors, or that their agency was employed, is contrary to the whole tenor of Scripture. Still less admissible is the method of solution proposed by Tuch, that the words are a soliloquy, as if, after one consideration and formation of his purpose, the Creator spoke out His thoughts! [soliloquy = talking to himself or herself… oblivious to any hearers present] DLK, http://dictionary.reference.com

Let Us Make, Genesis 1:26

• The only proper and consistent explanation is, that this passage, which stands at the very commencement of revelation, contains an obscure intimation of the great mystery of the Godhead, which was clearly made known by the subsequent and sublime discoveries of the Gospel.”

Created in the Image of God

• “Genesis 1:24-31 Day six was Creation's climax for it included mankind. Though man was the last creature mentioned in the account, he did not evolve; he was created.

• Human life was created in (lit., "as," meaning "in essence as") the image of God (v. 27). This image was imparted only to humans (2:7). "Image" (selem)…

• Bible Knowledge Commentary/Old Testament

Created in the Image of God

• is used figuratively here, for God does not have a human form. Being in God's image means that humans share, though imperfectly and finitely, in God's nature, that is, in His communicable attributes (life, personality, truth, wisdom, love, holiness, justice), and so have the capacity for spiritual fellowship with Him.”

• Bible Knowledge Commentary/Old Testament

Created in the Image of God

• God is an eternal Trinity of three persons; Father, Son, and Holy Spirit

• Humans have 3 aspects, body, soul, and spirit• Soul= emotion, intellect, and will (dogs have a soul)

• Our spirit is unique to humans and God• Our speech is unique to humans and God (angels)

• Our relationship to God is unique to humans • Our worth to God is unique to humans• " 2 Corinthians 5:21 He made Him who knew no sin to

be sin on our behalf, so that we might become the righteousness of God in Him." (Jn 3:16)

Page 41: Genesis, ch 1, #4, 1;20 27, 8-26-12

Created in the Image of God

• We are unique in that we have a spirit. Giving us the ability to reason, love, and commune with God.

• "Isaiah 1:18 "Come now, and let us reason together," Says the LORD, "Though your sins are as scarlet, They will be as white as snow; Though they are red like crimson, They will be like wool."

• "Luke 10:27 And he answered, "YOU SHALL LOVE THE LORD YOUR GOD WITH ALL YOUR HEART, AND WITH ALL YOUR SOUL, AND WITH ALL YOUR STRENGTH, AND WITH ALL YOUR MIND; AND YOUR NEIGHBOR AS YOURSELF.""

Created in the Image of God, Dr. Ryrie

• Image…likeness. Interchangeable terms (5:3) indicating that man was created in a natural and moral likeness to God. When he sinned, he lost the moral likeness, which was his sinlessness, but the natural likeness of intellect, emotions, and will he still retains (cf.9:6; James 3:9).
