Useful Words and ExpressionsLesson #1: Entering the Masjid
• Assalamu’alaikum We can present the Islamic greeting to our guests
while at the same time helping them understand what it means:
“Peace be upon you” A useful quote for this occasion would be the Hadith of the
Prophet Muhammad p.b.u.h.:
“Shall I lead you to something that will cause you to love each other:
spread the greetings of peace among yourselves.”
• Masjid While some of our guests might be used to the
term “Mosque”, we encourage Muslims to make use of the original Arabic term: Masjid.
We can explain to our visitors that the original term has a beautiful meaning, as it refers to “a place for prostration(sujud)”.
This can also be a good opportunity to teach them how Muslims prostrate (sujud), and explain to them that it is a vital part of our worship.
• Hijab / Headscarf We should explain to our guests that it is part of
Muslim dress etiquette to wear Hijab.
We can help them relate to the concept by mentioning the fact that women from different religions usually cover up in the context of worship or devotion. An example of this being nuns.
• Concept of Worship We must present the concept of worship in Islam in
terms of the Masjid. It is a house of worship and its main purpose is as
a place meant for Muslims to direct worship to God. Due respect is expected of those visiting the
Masjid, whether they be Muslims or non-Muslims. The fact that the Masjid is a House of God requires
the need of proper etiquette while in its premises.
• House of God It is fitting to use the term “House of God” to refer
to the Masjid. Doing so can also help our guests feel the
importance of the Masjid and inspire respect towards it.
