The Blood!

Lev. 17:11 'For the life of the flesh is in the blood, and I have given it to you uponthe altar to make

atonement for your souls; for it is the blood that makes atonement for the soul.'

Life is in the blood!▪Gen 9:4 “But you shall not eat flesh with

its life, that is, its blood.” (Cf. Lev. 17:11)▪Deut 12:23 “Only be sure that you do not

eat the blood, for the blood is the life; you may not eat the life with the meat.”

▪Act 15:20 “but that we write to them to abstain from things polluted by idols, from sexual immorality, from things strangled, and from blood.” (Cf. Act 15:29)

Blood Brothers!

Gen. 4:9-11 Then the LORD said to Cain, "Where is Abel your brother?"

He said, "I do not know. Am I my brother's keeper?" And He said,

"What have you done? The voice of your brother's blood cries out to Me from the ground. "So now you are cursed from the earth, which has opened its mouth to receive your brother's blood from your hand.

How many of you ever became “blood brothers/sisters” when you

were kids?▪Blood brothers = a man or boy who has

sworn to treat another as his brother, often in a ceremony in which their blood is mingled; a brother by birth with one or two of the same parents (Oxford Univ. Dict.)

▪Did you know the 1st President of the United States died as a result of blood lose? He died from pneumonia & blood- letting!

I. The Purpose of Blood!▪In our physical body blood circulates

oxygen and carbon dioxide through our arteries and veins. Blood is the “fluid of life”

▪One of the most amazing things about blood is that it is able to both bring you what you need and remove waste at the same time!

▪We have 5 quarts in our bodies, that travels through every cell in 23 seconds!

What this would look like!

▪Imagine that the same truck that brought our groceries was also the garbage truck and that they were all carried together at the same time, but some how the waste didn’t contaminate the food!

▪It is also through our blood that the body is able to kill and fight off germs and infections!

Moving from the physical to the spiritual!

▪Our physical life is sustained by our own blood, but spiritual life by the blood of another!▸Rev 1:5 and from Jesus Christ, the faithful

witness, the firstborn from the dead, and the ruler over the kings of the earth. To Him who loved us and washed us from our sins in His own blood,▸1 Pet 1:19 but with the precious blood of

Christ, as of a lamb without blemish and without spot.

II. The Power of Blood!▪ Power = the ability to do something or

act in a particular way; the capacity to influence other people or the course of events; the right or authority given to a person; physical strength or force (Oxford)

▪Power is found in the Bible a lot of times!▸KJV = 267▸NKJV = 237▸RSV = 241

Over 100 times in the New Testament alone!

▪There are a total of 8 words in the Greek New Testament translated “power!”▸They carry 4 basic meanings = rule, strength,

authority and force!▪Out of the 8 words & 100+ verses 75% of

them come from the word “doo-nam-is”▸It is from this word we get “dynamite” (Rom.

1:16)▸Next most common “ex-oo-see-ah” often

translated “authority” (Mt. 28:18)

The Purpose and the Power!

▪The Purpose of blood is to give life/ sustain life!

▪The Power of blood is to change life!▸Dynamite brings about the “result” of

change!▸Authority brings about the “right” to

change!

III. The Pardon of Blood!▪How many of us here understand what a

pardon is? I am sure we have all read or seen where someone is “pardoned” from a crime or sentence!

▪Pardon = the action of forgiving or being forgiven for an error or offence; a remission of the legal consequences of an offence or conviction (Oxford)

▪Purpose of blood = Sustain! Power of blood = Change! Pardon of blood = Bring!

It is only by the blood of Christ that we can be pardoned from sin!▪Rom 3:23 “for all have sinned and fall short

of the glory of God” (cf. 3:10-12)▪Rom 6:23 “For the wages of sin is death, but

the gift of God is eternal life in Christ Jesus our Lord.”

▪This is “why” Christ came!(1 Pet.1:18-20)▸Heb 9:12 Not with the blood of goats and

calves, but with His own blood He entered the Most Holy Place once for all, having obtained eternal redemption.(Cf 2 Cor. 5:21)

Conclusion:▪Have you become “blood brothers” with

Christ? Have you accessed the blood of Jesus through the waters of baptism? Are you in Christ tonight?

▪This is the best covenant you will ever make and all it requires a life of commitment! Trusting Jesus each day!

▪1Jn 1:7 But if we walk in the light as He is in the light, we have fellowship with one another, and the blood of Jesus Christ His Son cleanses us from all sin.
