Session 6:
God’s only Son, our Lord
The Apostles’ CreedI believe in God, the Father almighty,
creator of heaven and earth. I believe in Jesus Christ, God's only Son, our
Lord, who was conceived by the Holy Spirit,
born of the Virgin Mary, suffered under Pontius Pilate,
was crucified, died, and was buried; he descended to the dead.
On the third day he rose again; he ascended into heaven,
he is seated at the right hand of the Father, and he will come again to judge the living and the
dead. I believe in the Holy Spirit, the holy catholic church, the communion of saints, the forgiveness of sins,
the resurrection of the body, and the life everlasting. AMEN.
5Have this attitude in yourselves which was also in Christ Jesus, 6who, although He existed in the form of God, did not regard equality with God a thing to be grasped, 7but emptied Himself, taking the form of a bond-servant, and being made in the likeness of men. 8Being found in appearance as a man, He humbled Himself by becoming obedient to the point of death, even death on a cross. 9For this reason also, God highly exalted Him, and bestowed on Him the name which is above every name, 10so that at the name of Jesus EVERY KNEE WILL BOW, of those who are in heaven and on earth and under the earth, 11and that every tongue will confess that Jesus Christ is Lord, to the glory of God the Father.
GOD’S ONLY SON, OUR LORDPhilippians 2:5-11
What does it mean to call Jesus Lord?
• Copernicus...– Faith in the Lordship of Jesus involves the
same kind of shift.
–I am not the center of things; God is.
To say “Christ is Lord” is to...
• Live according to the Truth, not the culture, not our own ideas, not simply according to tradition.
• Jesus came not just so that we could feel different, but so that we could be different.
To say “Christ is Lord” is to...
• Endeavor to be like Christ...to have the mind or attitude of Christ
• 5Have this attitude in yourselves which was also in Christ Jesus, – To think his thoughts– To value His values– To be offended by what offends Him– To pursue His pursuits
To say “Christ is Lord” is to...
• Reject others who claim authority over us• No one can serve two masters. Either
he will hate the one and love the other, or he will be devoted to the one and despise the other. You cannot serve both God and Money. Matthew 6– Those who seduce us away from the Way of Jesus
• Desires of our flesh• Unbiblical thoughts (lies about ourselves, others)• Anything addictive (which is a lot of things!!)• Worldly leaders (adults and peers)
To say “Christ is Lord” is to...
• Make a radical statement– For us, calling Jesus Lord has become almost
commonplace. – For early Christ-followers it would have been a
radical statement.• Lord (Kyrios) was reserved for the Emperor• To call Jesus Lord was to say there was another
who was equal to or even greater than the emperor. • Many were and are tortured or killed for this.
– Martyr = Witness
Acts 17:5-7
1 Now when they had passed through Amphipolis and Apollonia,
they came to Thessalonica, where there was a synagogue of the
Jews. 2 Then Paul, as his custom was, went in to them, and for
three Sabbaths reasoned with them from the
Scriptures, 3 explaining and demonstrating that the Christ had
to suffer and rise again from the dead, and saying, “This Jesus
whom I preach to you is the Christ.” 4 And some of them were
persuaded; and a great multitude of the devout Greeks, and not
a few of the leading women, joined Paul and Silas.
5 But the Jews who were not persuaded, becoming envious,
[a] took some of the evil men from the marketplace, and
gathering a mob, set all the city in an uproar and attacked the
house of Jason, and sought to bring them out to the
people. 6 But when they did not find them, they dragged Jason
and some brethren to the rulers of the city, crying out, “These
who have turned the world upside down have come here
too. 7 Jason has harbored them, and these are all acting
contrary to the decrees of Caesar, saying there is another king—
Jesus.”

• 12 Do not let anyone treat you as if you are unimportant because you are young. Instead, be an example to the believers with your words, your actions, your love, your faith, and your pure life. 1 Timothy 4:12
