i.) FIRMLY

-the salvific truth that God teaches us through the Scripture is NORMATIVE of our faith.

-what is written in Scripture is that which God precisely willed the human authors to write, under the inspiration of His divine Spirit.

-if the Bible is of God, it cannot be in error as God is the author of truth, not lies.

- “The Sacred Scripture is the word of God inasmuch as it is consigned to writing under the inspiration of the Holy Spirit.” (Dei Verbum 9 & 11)

1.) The entirety of the canonical Scriptures comes from God in a way that is distinctive from the fact that all things have been created by God or the gifted poets are said to be “inspired.”

2.) Those who actually wrote the Scriptures did so in a truly human fashion, that is, they retained their freedom, their personalities, their strengths, and their weaknesses.

1.) Faced with new facts from natural sciences and religious studies that suggest that positions contained in the bible are not longer tenable or not original, Vatican II affirms that there is NO ERROR in SS as far as salvific truth is concerned. (DV 11; CFC 89; CCC 107)

2.) To present inerrancy in a positive manner, Vatican II introduced a more biblical use of truth, which was above all, a faithful and merciful communication of God as he saves the world.

-the truth of SS is the full and universal truth of God’s redeeming plan for humanity.

3.) The Big Question: If the Bible is of God, it cannot be in

error since God is the author of truth and not of lies.

3.a) The words of the Bible are true only in the sense in which the human authors conveyed them.

-We must determine how the human authors thought, what influenced them, etc.

3.b.) The human authors were not necessarily without error.

-many of their personal opinions and even convictions may have

been wrong.

-inerrancy means that these opinions and convictions did not affect the message itself.

3.c) Inerrancy does not rule out the use of common literary devices such as poetry, figures of speech, paradox, approximation, inexact quotation, folklore, song, etc.

3.d) Insofar which are made of inerrancy for the sake of salvation.

-ERGO, “the books of Scripture must be acknowledged as teaching firmly, faithfully and without error that truth which God wanted put into the sacred writings for the sake of our salvation.” (Dei Verbum 11)
