Vistas
Mark 8:34-38
Between Momentous Events:
Confession
Mark 8:27-29 NIV Jesus and his
disciples went on to the villages
around Caesarea Philippi. On the
way he asked them, "Who do
people say I am?" They replied,
"Some say John the Baptist;
others say Elijah; and still others,
one of the prophets." "But what
about you?" he asked. "Who do
you say I am?" Peter answered,
"You are the Messiah."
Between Momentous Events:
Confession
Mark 8:31-33 NIV He then
began to teach them that the
Son of Man must suffer many
things and be rejected … and
that he must be killed and
after three days rise again. …
Peter took him aside and
began to rebuke him. But
when Jesus turned…he
rebuked Peter. "Get behind me,
Satan!" he said. "You do not
have in mind the concerns of
God, but merely human
concerns."
Between Momentous Events:
Confession
Confirmation
Mark 9:2-8 NIV After six days
Jesus took Peter, James and
John with him and led them up
a high mountain, where they
were all alone. There he was
transfigured before them. His
clothes became dazzling white,
whiter than anyone in the
world could bleach them. And
there appeared before them
Elijah and Moses.
Between Momentous Events:
Confession
Confirmation
Peter said to Jesus, "Rabbi, it is
good for us to be here. Let us
put up three shelters--one for
you, one for Moses and one for
Elijah." …Then a cloud
appeared and covered them,
and a voice came from the
cloud: "This is my Son, whom I
love. Listen to him!" Suddenly,
when they looked around, they
no longer saw anyone with
them except Jesus.
CHALLENGE OF DISCIPLESHIP
Mark 8:34
Then he called the crowd to
him along with his disciples
and said: "If anyone would
come after me, he must deny
himself and take up his cross
and follow me.

said to them all:
"Whoever wants to be
my disciple must deny
themselves and take
up their cross daily and
follow me.

Mark 1:16-18 NIV84 As
Jesus walked beside the
Sea of Galilee, he saw
Simon and his brother
Andrew casting a net into
the lake, for they were
fishermen. "Come, follow
me," Jesus said, "and I will
make you fishers of men."
At once they left their nets
and followed him.

Mark 2:14 NIV84 As
he walked along, he
saw Levi son of
Alphaeus sitting at the
tax collector's booth.
"Follow me," Jesus told
him, and Levi got up
and followed him.

Mark 10:17-21 NIV84 As Jesus
started on his way, a man ran
up to him and fell on his knees
before him. "Good teacher," he
asked, "what must I do to
inherit eternal life?" "Why do
you call me good?" Jesus
answered. "No one is good—
except God alone. You know
the commandments …“
"Teacher," he declared, "all
these I have kept since I was a
boy."

Jesus looked at him and loved
him. "One thing you lack," he
said. "Go, sell everything you

you will have treasure in
heaven. Then come, follow
me."

Philippians 3:8-11 NIV84 … I
consider everything a loss
compared to the surpassing
greatness of knowing Christ
Jesus my Lord, for whose sake I
have lost all things. I consider
them rubbish, that I may gain
Christ and be found in him, not
having a righteousness of my
own that comes from the law,
but that which is through faith
in Christ—the righteousness
that comes from God and is by
faith.

I want to know Christ and the
power of his resurrection and
the fellowship of sharing in his
sufferings, becoming like him
in his death, and so, somehow,
to attain to the resurrection
from the dead.

Galatians 2:20 NIV84 I
have been crucified
with Christ and I no
longer live, but Christ
lives in me. The life I
live in the body, I live
by faith in the Son of
God, who loved me
and gave himself for
me.
ELABORATING ON THE CHALLENGE
Mark 8:35-38
A Paradox:Mark 8:35 NIV For whoever wants to save their life will lose it, but whoever loses their life for me and for the gospel will save it.
Romans 8:16-17 NIV The Spirit himself testifies with our spirit that we are God's children. Now if we are children, then we are heirs--heirs of God and co-heirs with Christ, if indeed we share in his sufferings in order that we may also share in his glory.
An Economics Lesson:Mark 8:36-37 NIV What good is it for someone to gain the whole world, yet forfeit their soul? Or what can anyone give in exchange for their soul?
Psalms 49:16-20 Do not be overawed when others grow rich, when the splendor of their houses increases; for they will take nothing with them when they die, their splendor will not descend with them. Though while they live they count themselves blessed-- and people praise you when you prosper-- they will join those who have gone before them, who will never again see the light of life. People who have wealth but lack understanding are like the beasts that perish.
The ClimaxMark 8:38 NIV If anyone is ashamed of me and my words in this adulterous and sinful generation, the Son of Man will be ashamed of them when he comes in his Father's glory with the holy angels."
Romans 1:16-17 NIV For I am not ashamed of the gospel, because it is the power of God that brings salvation to everyone who believes: first to the Jew, then to the Gentile. For in the gospel the righteousness of God is revealed--a righteousness that is by faith from first to last, just as it is written: "The righteous will live by faith."

Revelation 20:12 NIV And I saw the dead, great and small, standing before the throne, and books were opened. Another book was opened, which is the book of life. The dead were judged according to what they had done as recorded in the books.

Romans 2:6-8 NIV God "will repay each person according to what they have done.“ To those who by persistence in doing good seek glory, honor and immortality, he will give eternal life. But for those who are self-seeking and who reject the truth and follow evil, there will be wrath and anger.

Matthew 25:31-40 NIV "When the Son of Man comes in his glory, and all the angels with him, he will sit on his glorious throne. All the nations will be gathered before him, and he will separate the people one from another as a shepherd separates the sheep from the goats. He will put the sheep on his right and the goats on his left. "Then the King will say to those on his right, 'Come, you who are blessed by my Father; take your inheritance, the kingdom prepared for you since the creation of the world.
Jesus looks at what we did – not said!
For I was hungry and you gave me something to eat, I was thirsty and you gave me something to drink, I was a stranger and you invited me in, I needed clothes and you clothed me, I was sick and you looked after me, I was in prison and you came to visit me.' "Then the righteous will answer him, 'Lord, when did we see you hungry and feed you, or thirsty and give you something to drink? When did we see you a stranger and invite you in, or needing clothes and clothe you? When did we see you sick or in prison and go to visit you?'
Jesus looks at what we did – not said!
"The King will reply, 'Truly I tell you, whatever you did for one of the least of these brothers and sisters of mine, you did for me.'
