This is particularly relevant if the spinning "beach ball" symbol ison your display. This indicates that your Mac is busy..

If you are still able to move the mouse, you may be able to access your applications in order to save any unsaved work.
Step-3
Attempt to shut down your Mac normally by clicking on the "Apple" icon and selecting "Shut Down."
Step-4 Try the keyboard shortcut to shut down your Mac.
Press "Control" + "Option" + "Command" + "Eject." If the keyboard shortcut works, your active applications should close, and provide you with the opportunity to save your work.
Step-5If your Mac still fails to respond, you will have to force a hardware shutdown.
Hold down the power button on your Mac for 3 to 5 seconds until your Mac powers down. Wait for about 30 seconds, then power up your Mac.
