#1. Just Enough

In pursuit of a simpler, more user-friendly IT, retaining legacy software and surround it with new

apps can seem like a safer bet, and sometimes, it might be the right decision to sweat more from

existing IT assets. However, when you look at Design Principle #2, you may find that existing IT

systems are way over-engineered, and deceptively expensive to maintain.

#2. Reusable Logic

In the cloud today, you have Platform-as-a-Service (PaaS) and mobile Backend-as-a-Service

(mBaaS) as powerful examples of prebuilt business logic that can eliminate 80% or more of the

underlying IT infrastructure you need to create and run next generation enterprise and mobile

apps.

#3. Any Device

Creating enterprise or consumer cloud apps that work with any PC, tablet or smartphone device.

This means embracing Responsive Web Design (RWD) and in the future, with the emergence of the

Internet of Things, this will extend to many other devices, including sensors and wearables.

#4. Fierce Reduction

Fierce Reduction starts with the user experience as the Meaningful Journey through the Workflow

and Forms for a particular app. This is where eliminating all unnecessary elements also relates to

applying the principles of Meaningful Journey and Progressive Disclosure.

#5. Meaningful Journey

By defining users as a set of roles and in turn, thinking of software as an expression of a process,

each process features a set of tasks, where the enterprise or consumer cloud app must guide the

user through a Meaningful Journey to complete a set of tasks.

#6. Progressive Disclosure

This is a well-established interaction design technique especially important to enabling Fierce

Reduction in the pursuit of simplifying enterprise and consumer cloud apps. As in Web design,

Progressive Disclosure is all about sequencing actions within each screen: enabling software to

intuitively work the way people think and work - and avoiding cognitive overload.

IT silos are a curse in the digital enterprise!

We need the vertical to go horizontal in IT: enabling end-to-end processes.

The cloud is the only way to go – above a single organisational boundary.
