HISTORY

Facebook was created in A Harvard Dorm room in 2004 by, Mark Zuckerberg. Initially Zuckerberg aimed for the college demographics as its

core market group. 85 % 0f Facebook users are 4 year college

students( Gallaugher, 2015).

SOME NUMBERS FOR THOUGHT

1 In 10 people in the world are connected to Facebook (Gallaugher, 2015).

70 % of users live outside of the US (Gallaugher, 2015).

In 2011,profits for Facebook reached 4 billion dollars (Gallaugher, 2015).

With the number of users If Facebook was a country it would be the third largest in the world.

SOCIAL NETWORK OR SOCIAL MEDIA?

Defined as, “ on online community that allows users to establish a personal profile and communicate with others” ( pg. 111 Gallaugher, 2015).

Social Media allows users to use and share information but no interaction is needed.

Social Network allows its users to engage with each other. Facebook users can connect/communicate through, posts,

comments, games and pictures. Users on Facebook exchange interactions with friends, family

and social groups.

CONNECTING WITH OTHERS

Facebook is a free, easy social network. Users share updates publicly with friends, stay connected with family and

friends near and far. Allowing people to maintain contacts for years to come Private messaging also available (shhh.) 3 billion pictures are posted each month As well as 8 million Videos Switching costs are high with users. The average user has over 200

friends on their friend lists, making reconnecting without the site difficult. Hundreds of pictures uploaded, along with videos are also on ones profile. All having taken the users time and data.

HOW RELATIONSHIPS ARE CREATED?

Facebook connects users by being able to search for friends. They also have a “people you may know” view that are connected

to you by a group, friends, institution and/or employer. Friends and the user have to agree to connect. Facebook uses a Social Graph to map “users and organizations',

and how they are connected” ( pg.148 Gallaugher, 2015). Using photos, comments, group membership, games, the Social

Graph is able to link it all together.New Message

METCALFE’S LAW IN EFFECT!

As the numbers of users continue to grow Facebooks value also increases.Without Facebooks’ strong network effect it “wouldn’t exist” and gives Facebook a “Competitive edge” and likely “staying Power” (Gallaugher, 2015).Its “platform allows the firm to further leverage the network effect” (pg.153,Gallaugher, 2015).

ADS AND MONEY

Facebook makes most of its billions of dollars of revenues from advertisements. Engagements Ads are amongst the most popular, having the user interact with the

brand itself liking, or becoming a fan and sharing it with their friends and newsfeed. Word of mouth, one of the most valuable tools in marketing has turned into likes,

pictures and consumer usage as a marketing tool for advertisers. Facebook has lower CPM rates than other web sites. (Gallaugher, 2015). “Facebook offers advantages of improved targeting and social engagements”

( pg.158 Gallaugher, 2015). Users endorse a product or a business by pressing “like "allowing others to see

their endorsement (s). Costumer engagement is seen by the public and companies who advertise on the

network. “Facebook allows firms to continue to send messages to the news feed of users”

( pg.158 Gallaugher, 2015).

DISCOVERING OF INFO, NEWS AND EVENTS

Users are encouraged to share news and reviews. Events are posted shared, publicly and privately and a user

can be attending, decline an invite or choose “maybe” if something better comes up instead.

As I was disconnected from the world for a week last summer, two major events happened Ferguson and the Ice bucket challenge. I found about both of them through Facebook waiting on the Airplane back home.

SHARED INFO/SPOILER ALERTS AND OTHER THINGS WE REALLY DON’T WANT TO SEE ON FACEBOOK ANYMORE

Relationships. Facebook has a relationship status that can be posted, changed and reposted to a users profile. Prior to these updates one can usually tell when a relationship is on a rocky path.

Bathroom Selfies Pictures of users at church, who after a week of partying have

suddenly been saved on Sunday. Spoiler alerts let everyone watch the movie/season finale,

then open up a discussion about it.

CONCERTS, CLAIRVOYANCE AND COOKING

Users (me included) share events that are attended. Locations can be added. Quotes that we like can be posted, for added inspiration for

friends. And, food, lots of food, eating out, eating in, photos prove our

nourishment.
