Why define something that doesn’t exist?

When helping freelancers or self-employed professionals to succeed with their business aspirations, I first get them to define the separate identities of themselves and their business.

And I must admit that it’s always an interesting challenge!

An interesting challenge

As a freelancer, you may well say that you are the business. OK, well, that’s one way of looking at it.

Another way is to see the ‘business’ aspect of you as separate from the ‘personal’ aspect of you. This then leads you to create the entity of your business separately in your mind, regardless of whether or not you remain a freelancer.

Separate the business

Once you see that the business is an entity separate from yourself, it becomes easier to define what your business is about, what it provides, who it serves and why it serves them. You have simply ‘stripped’ it of any personal nuance and let it be what it’s really about.

This also enables you to more objectively determine the necessary changes your business requires to be successful. And as these changes relate to your business and not to you, they will be much easier to implement.

Let the business be

When doing your activity planning for the business, as a sepate entity, it’s easier to keep in consideration the personal aspect of your life, thereby preventing the business from encroaching on you as a person.

Although you keep your heart in the business, it continues to be a separate entity. Hence, when the business grows and the time comes to contract out key activities, it’s much easier for you to let go of them as you don’t feel you are giving something away that’s about you personally.

And finally, when business performance or results are unsatisfactory or if someone, such as a client or a contractor, negatively affects the reputation of the business, you feel that the harm has been done to the business and not to you as a person.

Hence, it’s easier for you to deal with it as the ‘personal’ part of you is still intact.

No harm to you

How can I separate the business from myself if I’m a freelancer?

There is no business. It’s just me!

As in anything we want to achieve, it all starts with your mindset. It is how you want or decide to see yourself.

Are you the ‘you’ or are you the ‘freelancer’?

Are you the ‘you’?

I guess the role of ‘freelancer’ is one of the roles you have to take on in order to achieve a desired outcome. But the ‘freelancer’ side of you does not define who you actually are as a person. And the same goes for the ‘business’ aspect. Make it a separate entity in your mind!

Once you have achieved this, not only will you feel more in control of developing and working on your ‘freelance’ business, you will also increase its effectiveness in terms of achieving the successful outcome you desire.
