The Permafunnel

The Permafunnel is an internal funnel installed in hand pumps, which provide the only access to water for many millions of people in the rural areas of developing countries. Water is generally pumped into containers with narrow openings (e.g. jerry cans). A large percentage of water is spilled due to the chaotic water flow from the pump spout (often 30% or more is wasted).

Sometimes external funnels are used (often made from organic materials like leaves), but they are usually not handled properly or might fall into the muddy area around the pump and therefore contribute to the contamination of clean water between pump and household. The Permafunnel is an internal funnel made of food grade plastic fully inserted into hand pumps to provide a straight water flow thus reducing waste and contamination. Correct installation ensures that the funnel is out of sight and never needs to be touched by users or pump mechanics.

It can be fitted following manufacture, prior to installation or into previously installed hand pumps. Currently the Permafunnel is manufactured in the former Sudan for 10 USD per unit. A similar price also seems to be feasible in other countries.
