NET-WORKING MSMEs ACROSS NATIONS FOR TECHNOLOGY & MARKETING

A JOINT CONFERENCE OF BRENAU UNIVERSITY, GEORGIA, USA, AND RIMSR BANGALORE

Of the many challenges the Indian MSMEs face, the two most critical ones that have defied solutions are:

• Technology, and • Access to International Markets.

In the past there were other challenges too; like, lack of undue formalities while setting-up a new enterprise, credit dispensation, lack of power, untrained manpower, etc. However, these problem areas have received the attention of the authorities concerned to be, and the situation has substantially improved. However, lack of modern technology, and lack of access to international markets have stood unattended to. In fact, it’s precisely these two factors that made China “international manufacturing hub.” India is no-where near China in manufacturing. True, with the advent of information technology, India’s service sector saw a huge growth and gross earner of the much needed foreign exchange. India has crossed forex reserve of US $300 billion chiefly because of the contribution of IT. But, is this a situation that need to be celebrated? A definite ‘no.’ Look at the plight of Indian BPOs. They have lost out to South-East Asian countries more than 50% of the market share. Likewise, this could happen even to the IT sector. The answer to this is to strengthen the manufacturing sector. The dictum of Sir MV “industrialize or perish,” is more relevant and appropriate today. But, the key to the growth and survival of MSMEs is ‘technology,’ for it’s only technology that can give the strength of competing with nations across globe. It’s technology that gives the advantage of improved quality, reduced costs, and access to international markets. And this is possible only through networking with other nations and not by isolating ourselves. Today, the large industries have that financial muscle to participate in the international arena; but the MSMEs do not have this advantage. Therefore, it was thought out to create a platform where these issues are addressed forthright and implementable solutions arrived with inputs from Prof. William Lightfoot who is an authority on small business, marketing, and entrepreneurship.

William S. Lightfoot (‘Bill’), Ph. D. has served as a Professor of Business Administration, and the Dean of the College of Business & Mass Communication at Brenau University near Atlanta, Georgia since 2007. He previously served as Associate Dean at the International University of Monaco where he was instrumental in helping them achieve a top 100 ranking for their MBA program by the Economist Magazine as well as the Universities successful pursuit of AMBA Accreditation.
