WHY KATLAMARA?

RANJAN’S GRASSROOTSPHILOSOPHY

Ranjan identified more than 230 sectors of the Indian economy that could do with serious design interventions.

‘If India is to grow to its fullest potential, each of these sectors requires every designer’s urgent and engaged involvement.’

Page 7: Make a DIF with Katlamara Chalo

WHY KATLAMARA?

A BRIEF BACKGROUND

• Ranjan was involved with Katlamara, a small village with local bamboo production and craft in North Western Tripura since 1979.

• He worked with local bamboo artisans many times over the years to help them develop and sustainable economy based upon their craft.

WHY KATLAMARA?

A BRIEF BACKGROUND

DIF has selected to focus on Katlamara, Tripura as its core project for the year 2015-16. Taking off from where Ranjan and many students of NID have been working with bamboo artisans. Katlamara has naturally growing bamboo locally called kanakais, and skilled artisans who make small bamboo products and furniture regularly.

INDIAN BAMBOO MARKET SHARE

Tripura services only 0.17 of the global bamboo market, and just 4.75% of the Indian bamboo product market. This is indicative of the fantastic market demand and potential

KATLAMARA CHALO!

DIF 2015PROJECT OVERVIEW

The Katlamara Bamboo Artisans grassroots community suffers from poverty, lack of commercial viability for their products, logistics challenges and poor road infrastructure.

DIF 2015PROJECT OVERVIEW

However, creating a sustainable bamboo craft-based ecosystem will require a design based intervention to:• Assist and support locally based bamboo

entrepreneurs to encourage capacity building• Create design and skill incubation for skill

upgradation, market exposure, prototype development.

• Create new market and sales channels for selling Katlamara made products.

• Educate children of craftsmen so that they can be groomed to be next generational craft-preneurs

IDENTIFYING THE PROBLEM

ISSUE 1 : POVERTYKatlamara’s Bamboo Craft artisans suffer from high logistics costs leading to high costs while transporting. Both bamboo farmers and artisans suffer, as they have not been able to promote local bamboo as a highly prized bamboo at affordable prices.

Page 13: Make a DIF with Katlamara Chalo

IDENTIFYING THE PROBLEM

ISSUE 2: DESIGN & MARKETING CHALLENGES. Products are needed that are commercially viable, competitively priced and marketed through proper sales channels. Earlier interventions suggest that knock down contemporary furniture with clean lines

IDENTIFYING THE PROBLEM

ISSUE 3: EDUCATION & CAPACITY BUILDING. There needs to be educating, grooming, and mentoring of craftspeople to ensure that they become capable social designpreneurs in their region. This is true for both current and future generations. It would be wonderful to create opportunities for women bamboo artisans.
