How to know if you should sell internationally

• Can you have your products delivered to overseas customers at competitive prices?

• Can you translate your listings and deal with customers in different languages, or will you only sell to countries where English is spoken?

• Can you efficiently manage returns for faulty goods from overseas customers?

• Is your product able to legally be sold into other countries?• Does your product comply with the laws and standards of the

Passive international selling

How?• Overseas buyers visit eBay.com.au and

purchase your products to be exported to them.

What do you need to do?• Add international postage options to your AU

listings.• Unless you’re offering Free Delivery to

overseas customers, set up flat rates to your largest countries (US, UK etc).

• Exclude any countries you do not wish to send orders to.

International selling via intermingling

How?• Australian Top-Rated Sellers’ listings can

appear in the search results of selected overseas eBay sites (mainly US and UK).

What do you need to do?• Opt-in to international selling• Qualify as a Top-Rated Seller in Australia• Add international postage to your listings on

eBay.com.au• Exclude any countries you do not wish to send

orders to.

Active international selling

How?• List directly on eBay sites of countries you want to

sell to

What do you need to do?• On each eBay site you wish to sell:

- Create a separate eBay seller account- Subscribe to a store- List directly on that site- Offer postage services to that country

- Research the eBay policies and rates that apply to each site as they may not be the same as Australia. You will be charged the selling fees for the sites you list on regardless of where the buyer is located.

Things to think about when exporting• If you’re actively selling on another country eBay site, check to see whether

you need to charge GST or not. It could give you a handy 10% price advantage.

• Consider whether drop-shipping from your products’ country of origin might eliminate importation costs and improve profit margin.

• The longer a parcel is in transit, the greater the risk of damage. Ensure you package overseas orders well. Use sturdy boxes. Use foam pellets and/or bubble wrap to keep items from moving around or touching each other.

• Where possible, use delivery services which provide continuous tracking from door-to-door.

• Take out transit insurance on any consignments you cannot afford to lose or replace. Put yourself in the buyer’s shoes and have plans in place to deal with lost or damaged orders.

• Make sure you have a reassuring and robust returns policy in place which is appropriate for overseas customers.
