When Should You Opt for an Acoustic Sound Barrier Fence?
While most of us use fences for security and aesthetic purposes, a perhaps lesser known (though equally
crucial and effective) use of fences is as sound barriers. Sometimes, you may want to have sound
barriers around your house to prevent from disturbances caused due to construction, vehicular noise,
industries or even a noisy park in the vicinity. Usually we overcome the problem of a noisy
neighborhood with soundproof walls or some other such remedy, which is expensive to a point of being
classified as a needless expenditure.
It thus becomes imperative that more of us know about privacy fence designs that incorporate sound
proofing methods that will enable us to have a disturbance free life; that too without needing to shell
unreasonable amounts of our hard earned money. However, you should ensure that the work of
installing the fence is done well. Though most companies that deal with acoustic fencing in Toronto do
offer customers with a warranty valid for a certain period of time, you should still try to ensure that your
contractor does a good job to avoid unnecessary hassles in the future.
You'd want to take special note of fencing with sound barriers if you have young children or pets that
are sensitive to excess noise at home. In fact, a lot of people use it as a safety measure even if they don't
live in noisy surroundings to be prepared in the event of a noisy occurrence, like a ceremony where fire
crackers will be employed. The same also stands true for household that have elderly members, since
constant noises, even at low volumes, can be a major irritant and may also pose health hazards for those
with weak nerves.
Commercial establishments are other places where sound proof fences can come in handy, since noise
can be a distraction for the employees and research has conclusively proven that noise pollution has an
adverse effect on productivity.
On what principle do sound barrier fences work?
Sound barrier fences employ a design whereby a property is covered with walls that reflect sound.
Remember that sound, like light, travels in the form of waves and can thus be reflected and refracted
just like rays of light (hence the principle of echo and reverberation). However, sound waves have much
greater penetration than light waves and cannot be completely cut out, though they can be greatly
reduced if the work is done by contractors form good fencing companies.
Of course, if you're planning on installing a sound barrier fence, you will have to compromise on the
view and some of the aesthetic aspects since the fence needs to be high and cannot have gaps as this
would let sound enter your house, thus rendering the fence redundant. Thus, you will need to balance
your aesthetic requirements with your health and safety requirements while deciding on your fencing.
