Many homeowners are seeing the logic of placing termite barriers in place for new home construction or in existing homes. The most common type of termite infestation is done by subterranean termites which form the main colony underground.

Usually around or beneath a structure, and then come out periodically to feed on the wooden structure of the home. Physical barriers can be put into place to thwart these little critters in their endeavor to eat out homes.



There are two categories, the first of which is a chemical barrier which consists of chemically treated soil. The second type of barrier is a physical barrier that is made of a layer of protection that is placed between the actual soil and the house itself.



The construction consists of a stainless steel mesh material which makes it very difficult for the termites to cross that barrier and get into your home. Typically, a physical barrier will be made of a concrete slab that is underneath the house along with a physical termite barrier.



While physical termite barriers will, for the most part, prevent most of the termites from entering your home on a mass scale, some may circumvent the barrier and get in. So a physical barrier is not always 100 per cent effective, and other methods might have to be used as well, in order to keep all of them out.



It may be required to utilize some sort of termite treatment in addition to a physical barrier, particularly if you live in a woodsy area, or an area that is known to harbor subterranean termite populations.
