There are two categories, the first of which is a chemical barrier which consists of chemically treated soil. The second type of barrier is a physical barrier that is made of a layer of protection that is placed between the actual soil and the house itself.

The construction consists of a stainless steel mesh material which makes it very difficult for the termites to cross that barrier and get into your home. Typically, a physical barrier will be made of a concrete slab that is underneath the house along with a physical termite barrier.

While physical termite barriers will, for the most part, prevent most of the termites from entering your home on a mass scale, some may circumvent the barrier and get in. So a physical barrier is not always 100 per cent effective, and other methods might have to be used as well, in order to keep all of them out.
