Crafting

The support families receive at Resurrection House is like a beautifully built, 3-legged stool. It’s strong. It’s well balanced. And it’s built to last.

Education

The first leg encourages education & training. Our goal is a living wage, not minimum wage, with graduates free of crushing debt, for the first time able to accumulate savings, and free of government assistance. These four participants were receiving Helen K. Leslie academic scholarships at a Business & Professional Women dinner.

Life Skills

Monday evening life skills classes are a requirement throughout a participant’s stay in our program. Everything is taught from budgeting and homeownership to parenting, time management, and learning to relax.

We even have fun classes. For example, Merilee has organized several craft evenings with the moms.

Stopping the Cycle

Our passion for education does not end with the adults in our program. We believe one way to stop multi-generational poverty is to work with our children. Every child, starting at 18 months old, is in our toddlers’ literacy program every Monday evening, working with volunteers in a myriad of ways to help these kids develop a love of reading and education. Twice weekly tutoring with volunteers and a Pinellas County teacher ensures the older, school-age children are receiving the help they need to thrive in school.

The second leg focuses on physical, emotional, & mental well being. It’s not unusual for an adult to need glasses, because of no funds for an exam or glasses. Dental care is out of the question when you can’t pay the rent or buy the basic necessities. Our experience is that most of the families in our program can benefit from counseling through the services of trained, professional counselors. Our partnership with Directions for Mental Health provides these services on our campus and in the privacy of families’ apartments. Often, other health issues have long been ignored. Dental problems and glasses are not in most impoverished families budgets. Women often have never had a breast exam or well-woman exam. We try to ensure adults and children receive the necessary health services they need.

Faith

The third leg encourages families to develop a strong faith in God. We tell families that they can get the education, pay off the debt, and accumulate the savings. And still, when they leave Resurrection House, catastrophe can strike. We believe that fear has been such a part of these individuals lives and encourage them to engage in a spiritual journey.

Our experience is that this faith provides the necessary strength when faced with problems. Monthly services in our chapel bring our families and churches throughout the community together. Our approach encourages respect for everyone.

Children’s

Daycare

Faith has run a daycare business on our campus five days a week, ten hours a day, while at the same time studying for a bachelor’s degree in special education and deaf culture.

Prevention

Well, teens are an especially vulnerable population. Because teens who have been homeless, moved from place to place, and shifted from school to school, have one of the highest rates of suicide in America today.

The Resurrection House Auxiliary is a perfect example. Founded in 1999, it has become a key to all parts of our mission. Our families succeed in part because of the support of the Auxiliary.

The Auxiliary provided the funds to build the playground for our daycare.

Every year, the Auxiliary prepares Easter “baskets” for all moms (and dads) at Resurrection House. As you can see, this project has grown quite a bit from baskets.

Caring and Sharing

The Auxiliary’s Grants Program provides $ for needs not met by other means. Funds from this program help our families deal with unexpected expenses.

Auxiliary members serve on the Board of Directors and volunteer in a myriad of ways. They spread the word about our program. Their financial support helps keep our doors open and programs running.

Makeover

Magic

The Auxiliary inaugurated Makeover Magic over four years ago.

Instead of a typical runway show, ours featured makeovers for four lucky women, whose experiences were photographed and shown the day of the event. It was a huge success!

The event has grown each year. This year we will be at the St. Petersburg Yacht Club and our theme is “Master’s Pieces.” Everyone is a masterpiece in God’s eyes!

The Auxiliary looks to the future as it continues to strengthen its support for Resurrection House. Remember those teens at risk that I talked about earlier? A new afternoon program for teens living at Resurrection House and in the neighborhood is being supported by auxiliary efforts.

Future efforts will help continuing the funding to teach youngsters to run a small gardening business from this building.

Auxiliary efforts are demonstrated every day in successful outcomes! 80% of families at Resurrection House graduate from its program. The effects are permanent. Graduates become successful, tax-paying members of this community that has helped them & we all win!
